One-Drive

I keep getting a message that tells me that my One-Drive is full and yet when I go into One-drive the figures in the top right-hand corner show 117mb of 5gb used.

I also have a little red minus sign in the bottom corner of my pc and if I hover the mouse over it, it too says my One-Drive is full.

Any ideas anyone please?

Login to OneDrive on a web page and check there how much storage is used. You may to prune your files from there if you have used too much space.

Also, remember that OneDrive keeps a Recycle Bin for files that you've previously removed in the last 30 days, if I remember correctly. That may be using up space you thought was cleared out.

If I go into One-drive and empty it completely will I lose anything from anywhere else on my computer?

I'm not sure if the items on One-drive are simply a copy of files held elsewhere. In fact if I'm totally honest, I don't really know what One-Drive is

I will have to do sme research to try to establish if I really need it anyway!

The files which you see on the OneDrive web page are physically stored on Microsoft's network who knows where.
The files you see in your PC's OneDrive folder are those you have chosen to sync and have been copied from the cloud to your PC.

If you select Files on Demand (see below) then you will see the files in the OneDrive folder but they will not be downloaded until you access them. if you see a cloud symbol next to a file / folder in your OneDrive folder then they are downloaded on demand. You can right click any such file / folder and select 'Always keep on this device' the that file / folder will be copied and synced to your PC. You can also use OneDrive / Settings / Account / Choose Folders to select which files reside on your PC.

If you delete a synced file in your PC's Onedrive folder then it will deleted in the cloud and vice versa.

I'm still confused, I don't know how I ever came to 'sync' anything, I don't recall doing it purposely, it's not something I would do as a matter of course. I'm 79, reasonablish on a computer but not really that tech savvy so stuff like this tends to go flashing by the old grey matter!

This morning I have been into One-drive and had a look in the 'Documents' folder and I picked a couple of them, I then went into where I know they are kept on my pc and sure enough they are still there. So my question really is, if I delete everything from the One-drive, will the originals still be where I saved them in the first instance and not be lost forever?

If you delete a file from OneDrive viewed online in a web browser or the local synced copy on your PC then the file will be put in the OneDrive recycle bin. It you then delete it from the recycle bin then it will be gone forever. In terms of grey matter I have one decade advantage!

The key is to check the bin on OneDrive on the website as that may be the problems

I have now checked the 'used' amount on my One-drive and it says 117 MB used of 6 GB so why is it giving me the message that it is full?
