    windows terminal password

Hi, I would like to try the new Windows Terminal feature to get my toes wet with bash. I read the install FAQ and saw you must provide a user/password that is not at all related to Windows UAC. Is this user/password for the install only? ...or does it mean I'm going to have to remember another login everytime time I want to run a bash console?

To install WSL you need to add it in control panel add/remove features. Then go to the store to select your linux such as Ubuntu. You do not need to run any commands to install WSL. Bash is an older obsolete name for it.

Once you get WSL installed, you can then install Terminal which should pick up WSL. You can configure Terminal to add Ubuntu and other shells.

Thanks. OK, but with the way you mentioned, am I going to have to logon every time I want to run it?

If you mean into WSL, no it goes straight to the prompt.

    Hi there

Slightly off the point - the reason it was called bash was because in Linux there are several scripting methods that you can use as "The CLI" or command line interface. The 2 main one's were the "C" shell and the "Bourne again Shell". The Bourne again shell was so overwhelmingly used - it's pretty well standard in every Linux distro that it became to be known as bash.

Although similar in windows you have the standard cli and you can use the power shell for cli functions (and more).

These are just scripting languages -- you could run REXX for example as a command interpreter or any programmatical thing that can make calls to Windows functions -- even command line Basic if you want --nothing special about any of these things.

What makes the WSL special in Windows is that to execute commands you have to pass those to a specialized Linux kernel which can execute the commands and then "replicate" the functionality on the windows Host of course. This is quite tricky to do as the WSL is not a VM in any sense of the word nor is it running as a Linux emulator. The fact that you don't even need to enable HYPER-VM shows that its running as a task under control of the standard Windows OS and not as part of a Hypervisor.

As I said not easy to do and the fact that it works reasonably well is quite a tribute to the Ms developers - sometimes though some of the stuff being added to Windows IMO is quite unnecessary and often totally Bonkers --the WSL is a great idea though.

    Cheers
