I completely killed Cortana, way back... nothing works for reset

I found the Cortana feature extremely creepy and turned it off COMPLETELY some years. Now I would like to use her for dictation but she is completely missing from the machine!

I don't remember what I did to disable Cortana, but I think I would have gone for the most brutal method because I got irritatated about its "spying" capacities. Now it is completely missing from my computer.. No process running, no option in start menu. Whatever I did, it must have been extremely effective.

    • I already checked the group policy and registry settings and that is not how I turned it off. Instead, it is as if Cortana never existed.
    • I even tried re-installing the Cortana package from Powershell... Still no sign of Cortana... (shouldn't that re-install take a while though? I only saw it loading for a few seconds...)

I am using Windows UK edition, with UK settings.
I know Cortana was there when I first installed Windows 10.
Is there anything else I can try?

Please do not advise me to perform a clean re-install of Windows!

    Hello,

If you like, you could try doing a repair install to restore Cortana without losing anything.

Thank you Brink! I saw that in an old post, and was just checking it out. But doesn't that mean that all installed non-Microsoft software is lost and will have to be reinstalled?

No worries. You will not lose any installed apps.
