How do I revert back to default .sav application

    Hello!

As I was curious about what a game save file looks like, I tried to opened a .sav file (backup of the actual save file of course) with the Notepad.

Unfortunately, I forgot to tick off "set default app". Now, all of the .sav files (for all my games that use this format) are set to Notepad.

After testing a few games a little, it looks like they still detect the saves fine, and saving works too. But I fear that all of the .sav files being converted to Notepad may produce an unexpected problem in the future (e.g. some progress data not being recognized and saved in the Notepad format). Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

That is why I'd rather make all these .sav files revert back to their original application. Unfortunately, after trying to associate a file type via the Control Panel, Windows doesn't seem to have it. I've read about using regedit and deleting values, but I fear it'll cause more harm than good.

Can someone please tell me a solution? Thank you.

EDIT: The icon was blank before I associated it.

There is no single application with which a .sav may be associated:

Was the icon simply blank/white before you associated it? If so it was not specifically associated with anything, and you might try to 'unassociate' it:

Hello Jimmo, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you like, here's a .reg file that will unassociate .sav files for you.

Once you download it, you would just need to double click it to open/run, and approve the prompts to merge it.

    Unassociate_sav.reg

(contents of .reg file for reference)

    Code:
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.sav]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.sav]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.sav]
