Search directory for - Will Greenway

Cut and then Paste into "Will Greenway" Folder
Ahh... Mr Kyhi... thanks for the input.

You're right of course but as I was saying in my last post the problem is not how to do it but how to get the computer to do it for me.

I think this is perhaps an opportunity for me to finally get back into a little simple coding.... it's been a long, long time since I parsed a string...

    This may be of interest:
Auto Sort Files Based on Rules | RoboBasket

    - rule based program as per my post above to do what you want (I think)

I.e. such programs exist- a matter of searching for them.

Yep, thanks. I think I referred to this in an earlier post. I took a quick look and got the impression I'd have to create a rule for each different author.. obviously impractical. Excuse me if I misunderstood. I'll go back and take another look at it.

Yes I'd imagine such progs do exist - in fact it was that belief that brought me here asking this question in the first place, my way of 'searching for them'.

I'd thought it would be a common feature of any 'good file manager' but apparently not.

No worries. I was only asking. I'll be happy to have a shot at writing such a function myself.

Naturally you'd need to specify what you want done with each group of files.
The program can't guess what you want, or where you want them filing..

If you find something that's already proven, would save time vs debugging your own script- and apart from simply the fun of doing it, could be a matter of time. And of course how many times you need to repeat this operation.

no, what I mean is there's no wildcard I can use for the author's name, there's no number of chars, no template...

so I'd have to tell it look for this author, look for that author....

what's done with them is always the same, for each group with the same (author's) name they go into a dir it has made for them by that same name.

I just had a thought though, there is a sort of template, I'll have a look at it and see if I can use it. You're quite right, much better something already written...

edit: ahh, no. It only has a selection of 'rules' to choose from. And the one I would want to use isn't there.

    - seems the sort of thing you want..

If there's 1 prog, there may be others including free. But it's likely to be a limited market..
