photo app gives me helpmsg 2182

I have been at this for months. My Photo app tile stopped working so I did a reset which deleted all my 50 people and 8000 faces in people section. It now only finds a dozen people. I have done troubleshooter, fix, reset, uninstall.reinstall the photo app dozens of times and the Microsoft store app, sfc scannow, DISM and followed all I can in various help forums. If I run the troubleshooter in photos and follow to the end it says there is an issue with Bits..turned it off and back on..restarts ..still same result. I am not a pro but can follow directions. All else works fine and I am not comfortable touching the registry. Does anyone else have any suggestions to get this photo app people section to get back to working?

    does this help?

Hi oldbob2. Welcome to the TenForums @oldbob2

Have you tried an inplace repair. This needs to be done with the boot media from your current version of 10, 1803, 1809, 1903.

If you follow tutorial and get new media it will do an update to 1903 which I don't recommend.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

You can get good boot media here

Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool

Your helpmsg 2182 is "The requested service has already been started." although I'm not sure what service.

Wow seems pretty drastic..I currently have Ver 1903 which you say not to go to but if I search Reset this pc after following your video I will still get 1903..this issue was present before the 1903 went in. Are there any less drastic suggestions you might have..this scares me.

Did not realize that you just went through update process, that upgrade would have likely achieved the same results as doing in place repair, which obviously did not repair your issue.

I might think there is some system corruption but again you just update to 1903 and I would think the installation of 1903 would have resolved.

I'm doubtful of this but I think I would try the first five steps in this tutorial.

Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

Is this the trouble shooter you used?

Run Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter in Windows 10

and when you reinstalled you followed this?

Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10

I would also create another user id on system and check Photos using this ID. See if problem associated with your profile or Windows.

yes that is the troubleshooter I did use and I have also done the DISM several times..as well as sfc /scannow and it found nothing. On your option 2 for photos, I have read that unrestricted level can cause other issues..so I did not do that. Your option -"ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted". I am not a pro so that made me uncomfortable. I did uninstall via a Admin power shell command and reinstall via the Microsoft store. I have also done a troubleshoot for the microsoft store. I also uninstalled my Norton and went thru the whole process and it made no difference..only finds the same 12 people with only a few pictures despite over 8000 picts in my collection. As a test I added a picture to my pictures folder and it immediately went into my collection..so it is just the "people" part of the photo app that does not work correctly. The app also does create albums and complete the search for the 8000 picts to be searchable (3-4 hours) . I do appreciate your continued help.

So the facial recognition is not working. Okay I found this. Lots of hits when you search facial recognition not working.

Is it possible to reset the facial recognition within the Windows Photos app? - Super User

I hear you on the fear factor and I'm getting the message you do not have a complete backup that you can restore from. This is an issue that should be dealt with first.

I recommend you use a tool like Macrium Reflect. What ever tool you choose, not Windows Backup, create and test boot media.

I do have all my files and pictures backed up on a usb ..just frustrated that this portion of the photo app does not work no matter what I try..short of re-imaging W10 and having to re-install all my apps that have been installed. I did delete the folder you mentioned and all that did was reset the searching for pictures and now the 3-4 hours to do it again..but already the same 12 people have been found and as usual only a dozen picts for each. Maybe Microsoft will change the app in another update but I do not hold much hope for that as we just go 1903

I hear you. Clean install is not fix but on many occasions it turns in the fastest resolution.

You have checked your settings and the appropriate folders are included.

You can try removing all indexed locations to None from the Photos App settings.
The point of doing this is to clear out the database(s) along with any possible corruption.
    3 dots > Settings > Sources
Remove all source folders, OneDrive Off, People Off(see notes for that).

Restart Windows 10 and the Photos App, obviously there should now be none indexed.

Then go back to the Photos App settings and turn People back on and add back the locations.
Then wait your 3-4 hours to see what happens.

That should be easier than deleting some hidden database file.
If it does not work then you had better contact Microsoft (That will waste a ton of time and you get nowhere...)

Helmut..thank you for your advise..did do as you suggested and fearfully I think I am at that dreaded "contact Microsoft" option that I am sure is futile...I did send feedback but also fear that is just a place for customer venting.
