Unable to get Your Phone working

After a week of struggle I have just seen there are a lot of articles here about Your Phone, so I will set about studying them, but before I do I have a couple of issues I would appreciate help with first, as I have been unable to get past some basics:

    1. I have tried fixes and troubleshooters without getting my PC my and new Android phone to connect. They are recognised and linked, but they do not communicate. As a result I have a long list of failed TEST messages displayed, following notifications that they 'cannot be sent', with no explanation. This leads to my next point:
    2. How do I get rid of / remove / delete past messages, failed or otherwise? There seems to be virtually no editing capability in Your Phone, apart from copying. I have not found any way to delete old messages, either singly or in bulk so the app is getting cluttered, which is unhelpful

If I can find answers to these issues I should be able to make a clean start with the articles on this site.

    Hello clayto,

Currently, you can only send and receive SMS text messages from the Your Phone app for the Android phone you have linked in Windows 10.

Deleting text messages from the Your Phone app is in the plans, but not currently available. You can only delete them on the phone itself for now.

Send Text Messages from Android Phone in Your Phone app on Windows 10

Usually, you can click/tap on the Refresh link to update the messages in the Your Phone app if successfully connected to your phone.

If the Your Phone app just won't sync with your Android phone, then you might see if unlinking and linking the phone again in Windows 10 may refresh and sort it.

Thanks a lot. I reply to each point in turn.

Currently, you can only send and receive SMS text messages from the Your Phone app for the Android phone you have linked in Windows 10.

REPLY I am not sure I have correctly understood this as it does not fit with my experience. The day I received my new MiNote phone I tried sending some messages from my PC via the phone ---- it worked perfectly (without fiddling with any settings). And I received replies from the recipient, hundreds of miles away. But is this what you say cannot be done yet, or have I misunderstood? Unfortunately, since the following day this could no longer be done, a pity as it something I especially wanted to do with my new phone..

REPLY I have understood that. Is it added in the May update?

REPLY If I understand this, does it mean that I can (probably) delete messages on the phone, then refresh the list and find that they are deleted from the PC? That would be welcome when I eventually get the two devices to connect.

If the Your Phone app just won't sync with your Android phone, then you might see if unlinking and linking the phone again in Windows 10 may refresh and sort it.

I will give it a try. I suspect part of the problem is related to my having had sign-in problems as well, with my password repeatedly reject and updated. I think it may have stabilized now, after signing in with another account..

You can send and receive messages in the Your Phone app, but just can't delete them for now. You can only delete messages while on the phone itself.

The refresh link just updates the Your Phone app to show the current messages from your phone.

Often unlinking and linking the phone again in Windows 10 will sort syncing issues.

Not that Brink needs my blessings (he doesn't) but I can confirm what he's saying as I've got my Samsung Note 9 linked to my PC.

At this point in time the "Your Phone" app is very limited in what it can do - allow you to send and receive text (but not delete); view images taken by the pone's camera. As stated, if you want to delete messages you'll need to delete them from the phone itself.

Anyway I find the app a bit buggy as I constantly get "We can't connect your phone" error. Even though all is as should be according to Microsoft. Hopefully Microsoft will improve things with the app and provide a bit more features.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the comments. I have tried unlinking followed by relinking but it is just the same. It is more annoying because at the start it worked well, for 2 or 3 hours. Then stopped communicating. So the function is there somewhere if only we could locate it.

I have had the impression that the Your Phone app is still in a 'B minus' state, which surprises me given that MS made a bit of a publicity fuss about it when it was launched. Perhaps it will get better.

However, I think I will examine some other apps in PlayStore which will do a similar job. I only had a quick glance as I was expecting Your Phone to work and I liked the apparent simplicity.

Good luck. And yeah, hopefully Microsoft makes the app a little more useful and less buggy.

    Peace:)

As a former Microsoft developer, I've discovered a bug. If you're in Windows 10, and you go to settings, and you UNLINK your phone, and the LINK PHONE. Sometimes if you have re-installed / factory reset your phone, the OLD phone ALSO shows up in the phones section of "Linked Phones" in settings (on Windows) even though it doesn't show up in the "Manage all devices linked with your Microsoft account". That will screw up your functionality with Your Phone app because it's fighting against which phone to use. I've logged a bug with Microsoft and waiting to hear. If anyone is truly interested, let me know and I'll post the link so you can subscribe to any updates.

Please see Feedback Hub - Windows Insider - it will open up a Feedback Hub in your Windows 10. Otherwise, I can't figure out how to share a web link to this.
