    MS Money 2005 Update

Thanks for the reply. I've gone through your steps one by one:

    - sfc /scannow - no integrity violations found
    - Checked IE is installed correctly in Control Panel
    - Downloaded the Money .exe file from the link you provided
    - Uninstalled and re-installed Money as administrator and the right compatibility mode

Unfortunately, the behaviour is still the same - MS Money doesn't start.

I also tried it on another PC which is running the same Windows 10 Home version (v1803) and it runs fine there, so it's probably not the Windows version.

The only other thing I can put it down to is what I mentioned earlier. When this problem started, a Windows update was due, so I scheduled it and then forgot about it with MS Money still open, so I wasn't around when Windows rebooted itself automatically during the update and may not have closed MS Money properly. Is it possible there is some file or setting that became locked when the upgrade occurred due to MS Money not shutting down properly, that is now preventing me from starting it normally?

There appears to be something odd with your installation. Other ideas:
    1. Uninstall the offending Windows update, check Money operation then reinstall the update with Money closed
    2. Recover from the last working backup - I use Macrium Reflect. Else try System Restore to an earlier date when Money was working
    3. Do an in place repair install

Also peruse this forum and maybe post a question there https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/...me?forum=money

PS are you opening Money by clicking on a link to your money file or to msmoney.exe? If the former fails and msmoney.exe runs then you might have a corrupt money data file.

In Settings->Update & Security->Recovery, I don't see an option to go back to a previous version. In any case, as mentioned, I don't think it is the windows version itself any more since I can run MS Money fine in the same Windows version on another PC.

Also, whether I try to open msmoney.exe itself or click on a .mny file, the result is the same, nothing happens.

I'll try raising the issue on the other forum as you suggested.

    Thanks for your help.

You should see the options in Control Panel / Programs & Features / Installed Updates (e.g. screen shot below) from where you can uninstall updates.
    Attachment 236535
Try disabling IE11 then renable it and set the defaults since Money relies on IE to work. Otherwise, there is something wrong with the configuration of your PC. All you can do then is to recover from the last working backup, do a repair install or failing that a clean install.

    Problem fixed!

To provide an update on the problem that I was having (couldn't run MS Money 2005 after a Windows Update), I tried most of the solutions suggested on this page and on another website without any success. At this point, I'd reconciled myself to not having a solution and moved on to using MS Money from another PC (not ideal, but at least it worked there). This has been the situation for the last 4-5 months.

Then, a couple of days ago, my PC did another major Windows update to v1903 (took about 6-7 hours to upgrade) and then, lo and behold, MS Money was working again. I didn't touch anything else, so I'm pretty sure it was the update that fixed it. Still think something was locked under the old version which caused the issue but, whatever it was, this has made my day!

Thanks for everyone's help (particularly SteveC) with this.

Have you been using the latest patched version of Money which is Money2005-UK-QFE2.exe available from here https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/...rs?forum=money I've had no problems but note IE11 needs to be installed and set to default settings. Any feature update like to v1903 does the same as a repair install by replacing and in this case updating the Windows files. Perhaps a repair install done earlier would have fixed your problem?

New PC and new W10 and new Money installation

I was greatly encouraged reading this thread and should be grateful to know how to manage my planned abandonment of W7 Pro 64-bit and migration to W10 Pro 64-bit. What should I be wary of in the following outline plan?
    A: Switch off - open case - remove 2 x HDDs (C and F drive) 500Gbs
    B: Fit new HDD 1TB
C: Boot using W10 Pro Installation disc and do as I'm told to install new system; new C:drive
D: Load my Office 365 software etc etc
    E: Download Money sunset
F: Switch off and add my old C: drive to PC - designate as drive F storage
G: Boot W10, run Money sunset using the data file copied from my old C drive, Now F

If anyone can advise if they see any issue in this plan and ways to avoid problems I'd be most grateful.

I would take a different approach:
    1. Backup and archive an image of the current W7 installation on an external drive - use Macrium Reflect Free and also make a USB Reflect recovery drive. This is to enable to revert to W7 if needed.
    2. Upgrade to W10 in place using the Media Creation Tool. This will give you free digital licence for W10 and should preserve your data and programs. See Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for Free
    3. Check the installation and archive another Reflect backup at this point. You should now have a fully working W10 PC and all programs including Money should work. You should use the UK version of Money 2005 I posted above and not Money Sunset which is a US version.
    4. You can then install your new HDD although I recommend getting a decent size SSD which will be far faster. Recover your hopefully working Reflect backup to the new drive. You have to boot from the Reflect USB drive to do this.
    5. If you prefer a clean install then install your new hardware and install W10 following this guide. W10 should activate using the digital licence granted after your upgrade from W7. Clean Install Windows 10

My desktop PC was originally born using Windows 8 and runs the latest version of W10 just fine without needing any interim clean installs

As I was the one who started this thread 1/2 years ago, I thought I'd post a quick update. I have used the Microsoft Money Sunset edition ever since I did a clean install of Windows 10 about six months ago. And it continues to work like a charm. I had used previous editions of MS Money for almost 20 years prior to going with Win 10.

When I started this thread (1/2 years ago), I was under the distinct impression that Microsoft Money Sunset was "dead" (at least for users of Win 10) because I could not get any current information about it. I only recalled "many" posters back in 2015 complaining about the fact that they could not get MS Money Sunset to work on their newly installed WIndows 10 computers. All of them (many posters) reported successful usage of MS Money Sunset in Win 7 and Win 8, but unsuccessful attempts to use the program when Win 10 was launched in 2015, without resorting to such measures as registry hacks. In fact, in 2015, there were detailed instructions for users on how to do a registry hack to make MS Money Sunset "play nicely" with WIn 10. Posters (back in 2015) were clearly saying that the MS Money Sunset program was "not" correctly seeing the IE legacy browser in Win 10; and that it was this reason that prevented the program from working properly. Those comments (from 4 years ago) were part of the reason that I waited so long to migrate from Win 7 to Win 10.

Whatever was going on in 2015, we know that MS Money Sunset currently works without bugs in Win 10 and that the legacy program is able to "see" the IE legacy browser (which it requires) without any action by the user.

MS Money Sunset is a great little checkbook program. Let's hope that Microsoft continues to offer IE as a legacy browser on their current operating system so that old/legacy programs (that require it) can work. Meanwhile, I think I will ensure I have a saved copy of the setup file of MS Money Sunset in case it's ever taken offline, and in the event that I ever need to reinstall it.

I've archived the last UK version of Money and associated fixes for posterity. I've also created a Windows XP Hyper-V VM for which I had a spare product key and Money works fine in the VM. That's a viable solution should MS ever withdraw support for IE in Windows 10.

PS - your selected font is too hard to read in the forum's dark mode.
