How to get application to work in Windows 10?

    Hello,

I recently purchased a new desktop PC and a retail license of Windows 10. I have an application that worked on my old Windows 7 desktop, but is not working on my new Windows 10 desktop. This application is very important to and need to continue to use it. Note, this application was developed by Klark Teknik back in 2006 and since this audio device is now discontinued, the software application will not be updated.

Note, this application is used to communicate with external audio devices via a serial to USB connection. The application can send or retrieve information to and from the audio devices.

At the time of release, this application requires Net Framework 1.1 before you can install the application. For example, on Windows 7 I would simply install Net Framework 1.1, then Elgar 2.6 and then DN9848 RCS 4.0 and everything worked fine. I have done this many times on Windows 7 in this exact sequence without ever having any issues.

Now, I am able to install Net Framework 1.1, Elgar 2.6 and DN9848 RCS 4.0 successfully on Windows 10. However, when I go to open Elgar 2.6 I get the process performance counter error. (Screen shot below)

After adding the following registry key and uninstalling Net Framework 1.1, I was able to open Elgar 2.6.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\.NETFramework\policy\v1.1

However, now I am unable to add a device inside Elgar 2.6 and not sure what to do. Attached is Net Framework 1.1 and the two applications. Well, the main application (Elgar 2.6) and the add on tool DN9848 RCS 4.0. After you have installed both applications and you are able to open Elgar 2.6, then you must be able to add a device. (screen shot below)

As of now, I am able to open Elgar 2.6 but unable to add a device. In reality, if I can't add a device, I can't use the application. Also, for some reason when I open the Elgar 2.6 is does not display full screen, the taskbar remains visible. If anyone can get this application to work in Windows 10, please let me know and thanks.

Run the installer program in admin mode from an admin account and use a suitable compatibility mode e.g Windows 7.

I don't have this application. But your first screenshot says the Performance Counters seem to be disabled. Try starting them in Services, then try Elgar again.

I have provided the application in my first post in hope that people will try to get it to work on Windows 10. Right now my registry is not a default and can't really troubleshoot the issue until my registry is back to default. Plus, I not the best when it comes to this stuff. If you can get it to run, please let me know.

You didn't attach .NET Framework 1.1, so I downloaded it from here:
Download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package from Official Microsoft Download Center

On Windows 10 (x64) 1809, build 17763.437 I installed .Net Framework 1.1, Elgar 2.6 and DN9848 RCS 4.0. All seems to be working.....

That is amazing! How did you get it to work??? Yes, you are correct, I couldn't include Net Framework 1.1 for some reason. In order for me to try and do whatever you did, I think that I need to restore my Windows 10 back to default. Is the only way to do this by formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows 10?

By any chance, is the application displaying in full screen? Meaning, the Windows task bar is not visible?

    Thank you so much.

Nothing special. The account I signed in with was an administrator, the Windows was a recent clean install.

No, you can Reset windows, keeping you files if you wish (but not installed apps).

You may not need to do a full reset, an in-place repair install resets many things but allows you to keep your installed apps as well as your files.

Yes, the application is running full screen, but the taskbar is showing on top of the application. Set the Taskbar to auto-hide and the whole of the app becomes visible. With the resolution I'm using (1366x768) the Taskbar is hiding not much more than the light grey bar at the bottom of the app. Set the Taskbar to use small icons and it is almost exactly the width of that grey bar. Right-click on the Taskbar and select 'Taskbar settings' to make those changes.

Okay, and thanks again. So, you signed into an administrator account and have a clean install of Windows 10. Did you have to start the performance counters in services also?

I am just going to format and reinstall Windows 10, I was planning on doing that at some point anyway. Question, after I reinstall Windows 10 and I'm at the desktop, do you recommend getting the drivers for my PC manually from the Asus and the Nvidia websites, or just get them through Windows 10 update? These drivers would be chipset, video card, etc. The company I purchased my new PC from recommends to get all the drivers manually, while Asus recommends to get them through Windows 10 update. Does this just come down to personal preferance?

Last, when I go to setup Windows 10, do I need to create a password? The only reason I ask is because you mentioned that you signed into an administrator account. Bummer that the task bar is still visible when you open the application but if it works, I will be very happy. I know you suggested to auto hide the taskbar, but I am not a fan of that option. When an application is running 100% correctly, the taskbar should disappear when you open the application, correct?

No. I just installed .Net 1.1 and your two attachments and they worked first time. I made no other changes.

The Windows I tested this with is running in a virtual machine, so drivers are not something I had to take into account. For my other PCs I let windows update provide drivers. I don't have an Asus (or Nvidia) but I'd go with Asus' recommendation for now and use windows update. Should you have problems only then would I get the drivers manually.

I mentioned being signed in as an administrator because that may have been why the apps installed correctly. The first account you set up when installing windows is always an administrator. For a local account (ie. not a Microsoft account using an email address) passwords are optional. You can (and I usually do, as I'm the only user) set up the local account with a blank password.

It only hides the grey bar at the bottom of the app. Unless that is used for status messages you are not missing anything.

You said yourself that this is an old app. It probably does not have the code required to be aware that there is a Taskbar or that it needs to hide it. Letting the taskbar auto-hide is a viable option as it will always reappear if you move the cursor to the bottom of the screen.
