Inserting Thumbnails in Video Files..... !?

    Hello Folks,
Got loads of videos I downloaded from internet but many are missing thumbnails.

Please inform what software can I use (along with procedure) to insert/embeded images that can be used as thumbnails.

    End use:
When I browse my video collection, I want to see thumbnail to quickly identify and locate videos.

    PS:
Using Win10 and I don't want any software that keeps needs to be installed countinously for an thumbnail to work.

That is really complicated. See this thread posted in another forum:

I would suggest organising videos into appropriately named folders and give each video a name that identifies what it is.

Note: I've tried various video managers including Veehive and some of them can let you grab a thumbnail to use - mostly those chosen thumbnails are not displayed in Explorer even with MediaPreview installed. Instead thumbnails are auto generated.

I like this software to browse videos:

Diffractor: Find and organize - photos, videos and audio.

You might want to test it. Navigate to a folder containing video then hover mouse over thumbnails.

A quick demo video. Video can be played within Diffractor and additionally opened in other installed media player. Towards the end of the demo video you see a video opened in PotPlayer with timeline thumbnails. You also get timeline thumbnails in Diffractor.

If you have the codec for each type it should just showup if you have thumbnails view but if there are a lot it may take time as it has to read all the files. If you dont have the codec they wont show

Well i have been there and here are my findings , initially windows and alot of platforms makes the thumbnail first frame in the video , so if you manage to edit that frame to something using a video editing program this becomes your thumbnail , this is why you probably do not see one because 50% of the time the first frame is a black frame , however sadly microsoft managed to give the right of picking the preview thumbnail to default program that opens it and then it stopped becoming exact science , some programs believe its a waste of resources to display a thumb , others do it from first frame after 1 second of play , others believe 20% into video is the best frame etc , so this isnt really youtube , it depends on whatever you set as a default player for that specific video format , in all cases however i suggest this player and codec pack https://www.codecguide.com/download_..._pack_full.htm , the player gui is still xp style but yet the features are very powerful and yet one of those that generate a thumb 20% into the video .

Thx for the Link and I had already referred to those forums b4 posting and it all seem exceptionally complicated and I was on a lookout for some very simple solution - Which now I understand does not exist.

I wanted to Embed Thumbnail on the video files, so it shows across all of my devices wherever I move my files. But most solution doesn't work and Icaros requires tht piece of software to be kept installed for thumbnail to work, which is sad.

Anyways, MORE INFO: Only .MKV files are missing Thumbnails and if I download Same-Files with .Mp4 format instead, it does show thumbnails but they are larger in size

On the Side-Note: YES, i always wondered why windows take a few seconds to display all thumbnails whenever i open that video folder and i am on an SSD. Doesn't windows cache all thumbs? Anyway to make it even faster to display...

ok i'll try to use a more comprehensive approach ...

1 videos do not have embedded thumbnails
2 you can not embed thumbnail into video because videos do not support such feature
3 thumbnails you see in explorer are generated by players designated to open the video
4 which frame in video to display as the thumbnail depends on the developers of the player and what they see fit
5 the developers of players choice of thumb revolves either on frame 1 , frame 1 sec , frame 20%
6 it is same on android and ios , every gallery or player has a mind of its own on how to generate thumbs
7 sometimes in android thumbs are not even still images but an extracted video sequence
8 youtube even allow for uploading a 1280 * 720 image to act as a custom video thumb so non of the above
9 there had always been a way adopted by torrent users of using a generated image file from video and giving it same name
10 the reason why is that you'd be seeing the video and a preview image next to when sorted by name
11 there had been tools that can create thumb / preview image files in an automated way example thumbnail me 3.0
12 it is understandable that end result will be files x 2 counting all the generated preview images

    cheers

This sums it up ! Thx for gathering all info into one fine piece...

Guess, I will stop stressing about Thumbnails on my .MKV files. Instead, I will download mp4 formats which does have them for newer videos and for older ones I will just ignore.

How about an accurate, informative or just a helpful one instead?

1 videos do have embedded thumbnails
2 you can embed thumbnail into video because third party applications support such a feature
3 anyone who painfully downloaded questionable wmv files on kazza and limewire back in the day knows only too well that you can inject pretty much any obsol33t hex into a video file, or
4 download TagScanner from TagScanner - The Ultimate Tag Editor
5 open your directory of videos
6 select a video and drag and drop your custom thumbnail image to embed it as cover art
    7 upload it to emule

    cheers

While I do know you could possibly inject a thumbnail using deprecated methods that may have existed back when ASF container was a thing and long before WMV , the problem however is that even with these hacks there is no guarantee they will display or be considered by concurrent players that take over thumbnailing generation by their own standards .

So while you are able to inject some thumbnail using MP3 meta tags on an MP4 do note that you need at least the Audio stream be MP3 not AAC or AC3 (The widely accepted sound encoders) , and while there might be other means to edit the tags of these other two encoding formats as a hack still the question is , which players support displaying them ? I-Tunes maybe ? But what if you have K-Lite Media Player installed instead , or how about Cyberlink Player , or Pot Player , would they display it or just generate their own thumbs , how about Android , will the Video thumbs be over-ridden by these tag hacks ? And Youtube , will it consider it as the cover ?

Long story short I overlooked hacks in my answer as they are just troublesome with no guarantees to solidly work .
