I know this is an old thread and solved but I was having difficulty creating the registry entry. I succeeded and am including the steps to save others the same work. Thanks VERY much for posting the original solution. It works like a charm.
From the existing HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile
1) Create a DropTarget key
2) Create a Clsid string value
3) Modify the string value by copying and paste the above {FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A} (no quotes)
This is what it looks like
I had initially created in application key and that didn't work. See attachments. I deleted that key. The correct attachment is keyfix. As always be very very careful editing the registry.
This fix does work to view jpegs in the order sorted in windows explorer ... i.e. by date taken. I tried the new photo application in Windows 10 and I don't need another app with 1000's of thumbnails created ... I just wanted a simple preview of the picture. Windows 7 Photo Viewer shouldn't have been hidden in Windows 10. It was one of the first things I added back in with the links posted here but until today I didn't realize it sorted only by name of the file and not how it was displayed in explorer. Thanks again and hope the above helps someone.
