How can I fix lagging software?

I've downloaded and installed QGIS. This is the only software I have problem with. It lags a lot. When it loads, it'll take 30 seconds, then when I click on the menu on the left side to navigate to certain folders, it lags for like 10-15 seconds before it will choose that folder. I've tried everything I can think of. I have a 250GB SSD, 16GB RAM, and an 8-core processor. I should NOT have any lag.

Have you tried opening Task Manager before loading the software, choose More details, Processes tab, and watch what processes are dominating the resources of your system. Change the column sort among CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network, and that may help identify the source of the lag.

I was looking over their site (End of life notice: QGIS 2.18 LTR QGIS.org blog), and noticed right up front that the new version (3.4) is replacing the obsolete 2.18. I'm not familiar with the product, but since it is a major new release, they are strongly encouraging all users of the old to upgrade. That said, if you did not completely and thouroughly uninstall the previous version, all the bits and pieces and .reg entries, you may have something leftover that is conflicting and slowing it down. Suggest a thorough uninstall with something like Revo Pro Uninstaller, or your choice, to ensure the install of 3.4 is as clean as possible.

You may have already done all this. If not, give it a try.

Hey Mate, just signed up in forum only for your topic lol.
I just ran into the exact same problem as you had one year ago. QGIS takes ages to start and when its running everything is heavily delayed.
Have you found a solution for the QGIS lag problem?

Yep I did. . . A complete fresh install of Windows and grab the latest version of QGIS.

Thanks for your answer. I had the same idea but sadly it doesnt work for me. Complete fresh install of Win 10 Pro (64bit) and the first Software after Displaydriver was the latest QGIS version and still hard lags on startup and when switching panels or clicking different buttons. QGIS in Ubuntu runs fine on the same machine. No idea whats going wrong there...
    Thank you anyway!
