You sure you don't have the Windows Photo Viewer files? They should be in C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer

If you really don't have them and you have the ISO for W10 you can use 7-Zip to extract the files from install.esd (or install.wim). Just open it in 7-Zip File Manager.
Now we're cooking with crisco, so I extrated the files and placed them in \program files\windows photo viewer\, which by the way, was not there because it must of been removed when I stripped down my image using MSMG Toolkit.

Now what do I do with them? When I double click the imagingdevices.exe, nothing happens.

However, after merging the registry file I do have Photo Viewer as a default app. But again, nothing happens when I try, "open with etc..." But we're definitely moving in the right direction because I didn't have photo viewer as an option before now and the reg file really made no difference (since the files were missing).

Try a reboot. Set defaults by app:

Thanks, reboot made no difference and it doesn't show in my list of default apps or in my regular apps and features.

    One more place to check:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll]

    See attached:

Try merging the reg file then log off or reboot.

    photoviewer.reg

Here's the default reg file. I replaced the hex value here so it's slightly different from the one i uploaded earlier.

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\Command]@="%SystemRoot%\\System32\\rundll32.exe “%ProgramFiles%\\Windows Photo Viewer\\PhotoViewer.dll”, ImageView_Fullscreen %1"

FYI: In this thead both the Photos App and Windows Photo Viewer are mentioned. You need the Store App to get the Photos App. However the old Windows Photo Viewer should work anyway.

If you want an alternative to the Windows Photos store app:

Before I merge the second file, I read the first post and followed those instructions and now the app is no longer available.

Should I merge the second file or is there a way to undo the first file I merged?

I think what I want is Windows Photo Viewer.

Suggest: Get the reg file available here:

Download Setup Windows Photo Viewer as the Default Image Viewer - MajorGeeks

Verify that you have got these files:

Merge the downloaded reg file (unzip and merge) but read the text file that is included.

Then merge the second reg file I uploaded:

    photoviewer.reg

However I have to say that either of those reg files work for me.
