    WARNING: CCleaner does it again!

THE LATEST CCLEANER INSTALLS AVAST SOFTWARE EVEN IF YOU TELL IT NOT TO

Yesterday I downloaded and installed the latest CCleaner installer. When I ran it I was careful to uncheck the option to install the Avast ant-malware software. THe installation ran fine and everything seemed OK. I later ran CCleaner and it also seemed to run OK.

Today when I started my system I got a small popup message from Avast saying something. When I saw the message I clicked it off immediately since I didn't know what it might be doing to my system. Then I ran the Autoruns utility to see what Avast software had been loaded onto my system. This was the result:

    WARNING: CCleaner does it again!-screenshot_01.jpg

Scary business indeed. I unchecked as many of the entries as I could to prevent them from loading at boot time. I figured after doing that and rebooting I'd be able to clean them out. But Autoruns could not uncheck many of the Services entries even though it was running in Admin mode, and when I rebooted my system failed to boot because it said my boot drive was invalid.

At that point I decided to give up trying to delete Avast (I've been through that hassle before and didn't want to repeat it) and simply restored my boot drive from a recent Macrium backup I have saved on an offline external drive. Now, even though I like CCleaner because of the various options it has I won't be upgrading it ever again.

    @bbinnard -

Interesting and you did the right thing.

I have CCleaner on all of my systems. In each instance the .exe's were downloaded from filehippo (via redirect from Piriform.)
I unchecked any bloatware and all the installs are perfectly clean. May I ask where you downloaded your CCleaner from?

    TIA

This is true but one should not have to do this. I will forever use CCleaner 5.40.XXXX as it was before Avast bought out Piriform . Everything Avast touches turns into the nickname of this product.

To repeat again: use the portable version, https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds.

I as posted will not use any version that is under the ownership of Avast.

above. I have the free version on several VMs, and after unchecking the "Offer of the Day" (One was Chrome, not Avast), it went fine without any extra bloat installed.

I know - I should have been smarter and used the portable version. I was just too lazy to go find it.

I downloaded it direct from the Piriform/Avast site.

After my restore I've got Ver. 5.41 and that seems to be ok.

Once Installed, I just extract CCleaner64.exe from the ccsetup553.exe and overwrite the existing one in my installation directory
    update done without risk..

D4ni3I: are you sure there's no Avast stuff on your system anyway? My guess is the installer routine installs the Avast stuff no matter what you tell it to do.

yes I am sure i do not have avast installed

the best is to use the portable version / no extra software / look inside the archive and compare to above
