To avoid the Avast offer, even if using CCleaner's free standard build, @ddelo gives a great option in his post #33 in this thread: Beware CCleaner installation! - Page 4 - Windows 10 Forums
And FWIW, ever since Win 10 1809's initial release last October, every subsequent CCleaner build has had some degree of difficulty fully cleaning 1809 -- primarily dealing with Microsoft Edge. Piriform was informed, promised a fix, but never delivered. They did come up with a temporary workaround which is still being offered, if you want to edit the registry in
Win 10 Home or use Group Policies in Win 10 Pro. CCleaner.com - How to disable pre-launching and pre-loading so CCleaner can fully clean Edge
I never have CCleaner clean anything.
Still do it all by hand...
Any Registry deletions need to have my approval.
CCleaner is just a "guidance" tool.
FWIW.
I may have mentioned this a while back in another thread but these days I always install and update CCleaner with the PC disconnected from the Internet (after downloading the installation file, of course).
Make sure the pre-ticked option to install Google Chrome is unticked before installing or updating (not sure if Chrome will install without an Internet connection but I wouldn't risk it). Never seen an offer for Avast, maybe that doesn't appear without an Internet connection?
After installing or updating, I disable and delete the 2 entries CCleaner puts into Task Scheduler (these need to be disabled and removed with each CCleaner update) and delete the CCleaner Updater that is put in Program Files/CCleaner (also needs to be done with each update).
I then use OneClickFirewall to prevent CCleaner and CCleaner64 in Program Files/CCleaner from connecting to the Internet (which stops shenanigans like the Black Friday 'flyout' ads from last November and goodness knows what else from appearing).
After doing all that I reconnect the PC to the Internet.
I get my ccleaner from /dev/null.
No bloatware, no malware, no problems. :)
At this juncture, it's been four months since 1809 "broke" a bit of CCleaner. With another Feature Update looming in the not too distant future, I wouldn't be surprised if Piriform just waits to see what the eventual 1903 might do. And, don't forget Microsoft is changing Edge to be based on chromium. When that happens, Piriform will have to do more work.
Hrmm that's very interesting. I did not hear that Avast bought Piriform. So, I no longer use CCleaner after hearing that CCleaner accidentially had a virus embedded on to the software. I'm sure Piriform corrected it. However, I currently use Glary Utilities 5 and had no issues with the software.
Sorry to say but if they have to dip to such a low (under the radar) type of actions. just to get there software installed then i would consider them slime pure and simple CClean stands on its own two feet AV does not and the bull you have to go through just to remove it. they are making a very bad name for the other very fine product.
