    Graphical File Manager

So far. My searches for such a software have not yielded any possible contenders. Which is a file manager which would display thumbnails of each folder.

What I'm looking for is a file manager which has 2 panes and preferably a folder panel for ease of movement. The two panes need to be displayed graphically (a thumbnail is good enough), not just the filename. What I need to do is to compare two folders both full of pictures and copy all the pictures which are in 1 folder but not the other, to the other folder. This is a one-way operation. Lets say 1 folder is called "new' and the other "old", I only want to copy files from the "old" to the "new" folder if they don't already exist in the new folder. The difficult part (for me) is the filenames are not the same in each folder. So I need to physically look at each picture, if it doesn't appear in the new folder then copy/move to the new folder. Delete from the old folder, rinse and repeat. This is going to be tough with low thousands of pictures in each folder. I suppose there is nothing which could actually compare the pictures, which might make this an easier task?

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Of course I would prefer free. But I would be happy to pay a modest amount for software which would facilitate me in what I'm trying to achieve.

Hi there are plenty of duplicate finder progs- you'd need to try them out to see what suits you best:

Top 5 Best Duplicate Photo Finder Tools to Remove Duplicate Photos | Ashisoft

Note that there's a world of difference between programs that can identify files with the same hash, size etc and those that can identify similar files.

Example: an image of reduced size or quality. Probably only a dedicated program will have a chance of identifying similar images, rather than a dual pane file manager which is non-specialised.

Illustration: XYplorer - comparison is limited to exact matches: you can see the fields to specify the comparison at the bottom.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm working my way thru them. Some install but don't run. Some install and run, but when I select the folders to compare, they show the folders as being empty. But checking with File Explorer the pictures are there. Don't know what's going on. Some seem to be only working on 1 folder at a time, AFAIK. Some want you to buy before I can even trial use the restricted options. So I'm still working my way thru them. 1st impressions is this ain't going to be easy for what I want to do without buying something 'blind". I've been bitten with that option too many times, to make that an attractive option.

The last review of dalchina's list the top recommendation seems to be the Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro which just happens to be the software the reviewer, SysTweak is selling. How reliable, objective can that review be? It also just happens to be one of the softwares with restricted options until you buy.

So not a lot of success yet. I can get both folders loaded in 2 copies of File Explorer, but haven't figured out how to put these 2 windows side by side. OK this isn't as efficient as a photo duplicate finder, but it's better than I've achieved with my duplicate file checkers so far. It would be great if I could get these 2 folders loaded into a duplicate photo checker. But so far no luck. At least without buying first which I'm reluctant to do without some solid recommendations.

So personal use recommendations would be helpful.

I got the File Explorer windows side-by-side. But I've come to the conclusion that it's too difficult to do this with File Explorer. I definitely need a photo duplicate checker of some sort.

Not sure how far you want to go but it may be worthwhile going for a photocentric application - as it will have much more focussed tools.

Adobe produce their own file manager (Media Manager) Adobe Bridge which due to a one time sales department Faux Pas, (****Up), is available completely free, and it also contains access to adobe Raw which allows quite decent image filtering etc

OK. I found Duplicate Cleaner Pro 4 by Volcano Software, on the Windows Store. It's not specifically for photos. Its a general duplicate file cleaner. But it has a specific section for photos. You can download for free for 14 days (with some restrictions about huge volume checks) and a reasonable $25 to purchase if it's any good. I got it scanning my photos as I type. It's going to take about half-hour. It has promise. I'll give some more information after I've seen results. It was easy to use compared to everything I tried above. Has promise, is what I'd say at this point.

OK. It found a lot of duplicates as I was suspecting. It will only let me delete files from the first 100 entries (restriction in the free version). I have 1600+ entries (800+ duplicates). There is no side by side picture comparison, which would have been nice. but you can click on an icon and the picture pops up. To be sure you can also click an icon of the duplicate, which shows it's the same picture. So the heuristics(?) look good. I think I can safely delete one of each of those pics it says are duplicates, with the same file sizes. So it'll do exactly what I want, even if it doesn't do it in the way I'd like to do it.

I can use if to find all the duplicate files on a disk, not just photos. So the cost of $25 is peanuts compared to the time I'm going to save.

Does anybody have anything negative to say about this software, or any better recommendations before I buy it?

Select a folder in each pane (navigate to folders you want to compare)

Place a tick in the checkbox for each.

Then use "Compare Items" button in the toolbar.

From there you can choose options to compare. You can also select multiple items to move in either direction.
