If it works, it works- great. It does on this laptop. It did on my other one for a long time- until I got hit by the bug/weakness/thing Classic Shell forum blamed Windows for/whatever it might be- with explorer hanging. On that one, if I don't run Open Shell, I don't have problems.
Still heard nothing, so I've had to cut my losses and give up on that one.
Unfortunately a large categorised deeply nested start menu is unmanageable with any Win 10 style menu. It isn't displayed correctly. Other start menus I've tried haven't demonstrated this problem, which has been seen over some years by a few, so seems a vulnerability intrinsic to its design.
Having drag 'n drop capability is a big advantage, as is the ability to expand the menu in columns across the screen.
The above still does not work and now I am getting white flashes. I may go back TO Classic shell, at least it worked properly.
Why has anyone dropped Classic Shell and moved to Open Shell?
I heard that the former was no longer supported ... but it still worked fine after 1803 and again after 1809.
Classic Shell is da boss. So why switch?
Not intended as any defense of anything, but there was a time when CS failed and crashed, due to an MS change of code that CS was not prepared for. Unfortunately, that occurred right around the same time Ivo decided to retire from CS, so it went dormant. Some people picked up the code on Github, and since it had been open sourced by Ivo, ran with it to fix the MS code crash. MS then later changed something to make CS viable again, but the Open Shell project kept going, tinkering with improvements/mods/tweaks/etc. It now stands as an alternative to CS, not a pure replacement as was originally intended. They both work. All boils down to which you prefer, and which works properly based on how your system is set up. There are and will be cases where OS will not play right, and cases where CS will not play right. There is no cut and dried hard answer to your question. It's all, all, simply a matter of choice. No right or wrong, just choice.
Start Menu X is pretty good alternative to Classic Shell..as soon as you launch Start Menu X...all programs and applications are grouped nicely.Since installation had no problems and the free version is ok for my needs and the start menu looks near enough like Windows 98 as i find Windows 10 tiles a bit fiddly.
Interesting you've tried that. I find the search results are displayed after some time. The author advised the time delay was introduced historically, and needs to be removed at some point.
An odd quirk or feature is that if I click on a folder I've created in my start menu e.g. Multimedia, Utilities, each containing folders of shortcuts from relevant programs, the last shortcut used in that folder is used. If no shortcut has previously been used from that folder, a program is launched, but it's not clear which one.
If you use the Power options box and click Sleep, when you resume, do you find Start Menu X is still displayed, and hard to dismiss?
Also noted that even if hibernate is disabled completely, it's still an option in that box.
I don't use hibernate,sleep..just start pc..do want i want to do and shutdown..i am still using it ..and a few things i like is that you can put regularly used applications on ' the start menu ' ie i use Bandizip,Bandicam and Iobit Uninstaller from list from the bottom left hand start button when you click it and you resize the main display menu and increase size of text of program applications on main menu and rarely move folders about and mainly use drag and drop,copy and paste etc.
Classic Shell has a lot of settings which i never used...just used it to have Windows 98 program menu display.
