    Weird pricing for TurboTAX 2018

So I need to buy TurboTAX Premier. Amazon lists the download for $70, but the CD with free shipping for only $55. Same on NewEgg. So I bought the CD from NewEgg. Duh. Delivered in only four days.

Anyone care to speculate on this pricing, which seems upside down to me.

Not knowing TurboTAX, I can only give you an educated guess.

Quite often, a software product bought on CD or DVD is just to that one version of it, whereas digital downloads often include all future upgrades.

Take Microsoft Office as an example. If you buy an Office USB or DVD, it's just that one version. Let's say you bought Office 2016, you cannot upgrade it to Office 2019.

However, if you buy a digital download (subscribe to Office), as long as you pay for your annual subscriptions, you will always have the latest version of Office.

    Kari,

TurboTAX is software for doing your taxes, for the USA. Once you install the software, it does auto-updates due to last minute changes in the tax rules or some of the tax return forms, but only for that one year.

This software is designed to do taxes for just one year, which means that I have been buying this software every year since I started using software to do my taxes. Sort of like subscription pricing, before anyone started to use that term. Buying a download means I would get the software a few days sooner but otherwise no difference.

Way, way better than doing the calculations and filling out the forms by hand, like I used to do way back when.

Yes. My point was, quite often a digital download costs more than a CD / DVD, because digital download includes future upgrades.

FWIW, the download updates are direct from Intuit (software publisher) and included without any extra fees. I got a letter from Intuit with a discount and recommendations to shop Amazon and others. LOL, found it even cheaper from one Amazon vendor and came with Free Two Day Shipping.

Probably volume discounts to the vendors determines most of the variations in pricing at the retail sale.

I do my taxes myself, without Turbo Tax. I've saved many hundreds of dollars every year ... because Turbo Tax misses out on so many things that save me money. It's huge.

Yes, hand-done tax work is a pain. But based on the hours spent and the money saved ... my hourly-wage equivalent for doing so is more than I've earned at any job I've ever worked.

Actually my tax workflow is more than just TurboTAX, but for obvious reasons I'm not going to explain all that here. I value TurboTAX because it does all the math, saving me hours and hours, AND because it prints out all the forms with the numbers all filled in.

I would never rely on the "Interview" mode in TurboTAX.

There's no need to buy anything online. Go to TurboTax online and you can purchase it there. No downloading, no CD's, etc.
