    VLC Hiccup

    W10 Home.
A few years ago I downloaded one or two cinema films from my domestic tv for my own use , onto bought blank DVDs. They are all finalised and play normally.
Recently I have transferred them using VLC onto an external memory. No problem, except that sometimes I was told that the final check (sic) followed by a long number couldn't be carried out. They play ok using VLC on my pc and tv, so I am happy with them.
Now, suddenly, if I try to do the same again, I am told 'You can't save to E:\VIDEO RM Please select another destiny'.
No help in finding another destiny, but I must confess that the VLC lingo is so obscure and spattered with abbreviations that I would.nt learn much anyway.
Please, how do I revert to saving as it was, i.e. from a DVD to the external memory?
    Thanks.

It is because those are RealMedia files. VLC has never been able to play them.

    Hi,

No need of VLC for DVD (or any other) files transferring.
You can see and copy/paste (wherever you like) your DVD files by opening them with File Explorer:

I have spent too much time trying to 'open them with File Explorer'.
Obviously I am way out of my depth here - everywhere I turn there are words and phrases that I don't understand. I am in a bottomless quicksand and I have stopped struggling.
    Thanks for the replies, folks.

What about pictures...and what is so difficult here?

    You're welcome!

    Hi,
Thank you for your offer of help but I think I should give it a rest for a while and pick it up later.
On the File Explorer screen I am presented with 7 icons: Docs This PC etc and no slight mention of what I want to do.
I have looked at the procedure for downloading pictures and see that even people who have the lingo seem to have difficulty so, ashamed as I am, I will come back later with more time, a stack of note paper and a rested bum.
    Thanks again,
    Ted

This PC : If you click on This PC you'll see your disk(s) and DVD drive(s).
Insert your DVD into drive and then follow my previous picture (right click on DVD drive=>Open). You are going to navigate into your DVD and see the files/folders which are contained. Then, copy and paste them wherever you like. What's the problem with that, is it so difficult?

OK. Take your time and come back with your questions and if possible post your screenshots:

PS : Don't be afraid to click on icons (links, like "This PC"). Τhere will be no explosion...

    Thanks, try again.
W+E for File Explorer/click This PC in left column (which I wrongly assumed was not part of the current work space)/insert DVD/right click on DVD RW drive/Open. This gives me picture 1.
If I Select All and copy and paste into Docs I get picture 2.
If I click on _RM I get picture 3.
If I click on _TS I get picture 4.
It looks as though my picture numbers have not been carried forward but I think you will understand.
    Erm, help please.

Ignore VIDEO_RM folder. VIDEO_TS folder contains your video files.

Open VLC, then drag VIDEO_TS folder and drop it onto VLC (or onto a VLC shortcut, if you don't have VLC opened). VLC should start playing your video.

Another choice : Open VLC, go to "Media/Open Folder", then navigate to find and select VIDEO_TS folder and...that's all:

VLC should also start playing your video.

Yes, V.L.C. plays the video, but I what I want to do is to send it to my external memory, so I inserted the ext. memory, waited for it to show in the long vertical panel on the left of the screen, then dragged and dropped the _TS folder into it.
When it had finished downloading (sic) which took only about four minutes, I clicked on the folder in the ext. memory and found what looked like the same two P.D.F.s and six traffic cones as in one of my recent photos above.

I have had little difficulty in transferring these films from D.V.Ds to the ext. memory using V.L.C., the only problem I struck was the message at the end of almost every process 'Could not read block 2147 483 646'. It was when I tried to discover from the internet what this meant that I was hit by strange words all-of-a-jumble.
I am taking a lot of your time and would be willing to stop here, unless you really enjoy challenges!
    Many thanks
