Oracle Virtual Box --How to get Win 7 x64 ver it only says x32

    Hi Everyone!

In my earlier thread Old programs from Windows 7 and XP not compatable with Windows 10 (which last posted in November---so I decided to make a new thread so we can continue conversation so many months later) Ztruker made a suggestion...and it took a while for me to prepare the computer to be able to follow it!

    Ztruker said:
Run Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine under Windows 10. I use Oracle VirtualBox to run XP Pro, Windows 7 Pro and even a copy of OS/2 Warp 4 as VMs via Oracle VirtualBox. I can have any or all of them running at the same time on my Windows 10 Desktop along with whatever I want running natively on Windows 10. See here: Oracle VirtualBox

You can then install the XP programs in the XP VM and the Windows 7 programs in the Windows 7 VM and they can share files and folders with the Windows 10 host.
Thank you Ztrucker for your help!

    I finally
Yes ! Finally caught up to the point where I could follow your link from November 2018 and install Oracle Virtual Box! (more about that later)
I installed yesterday the Newest version of Oracle VirtualBox just released yesterday! 6.0.2 minor maintenance release

    Questions
I did regular set up hope its ok

How do I now install Windows 7 Professional on Oracle?

These are Questions for "Windows 10 Forum---not specially for the Oracle Community to answer!

    Question 1:
What Product Key do I use? My old one from old computer? It has been changed 3x--I have no idea what it is now...
I can try one of the three I get three tries anyway right before Microsoft's Windows Genuine whatever it is called today program (if I recall this correctly ) locks me out!

    Question 2:
I clicked on "new" and got a menu with Windows 7 in it..
But that drop down menu ONLY shows the windows 7 32 bit version!

See attached inline screenshot (which appears at end of this post as I forgot how to get it inserted here!)

I needed the Windows 7 64 bit to run in current laptop with x64 bit core processors

But I'm curious... does running the Oracle VirtualBox sap; some of the speed or power from the Motherboard core chips so they run only at 32 bit speed?

Then I guess I have to go purchase a Windows 32 bit OS
I only have the Windows 64 bit Upgrade version of Installation disk!!

Now what do I do? (Do i create a iso? from what source disk if I only have the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade disk for x64! Its not the whole installation disk! ?)

    Question 3:
I don't know if you need to know this to provide answers about the missing x64 version of Windows 7...
I had problems installing the Oracle Virtual Box...it looks like its working now (but I can't tell as I don't have any OS's installed yet !)
But I got "fatal error" once
I got "disconnecting network interface" now....I hope it reestablished it properly....looks ok as I've been using the web and email since then without problems...
For example: Do you know how to "answer" this one:"

    "Warning: Network Interfaces:
"Installing the Oracle VM VirtualBox 6.0.2 Networking feature will reset your network connection and temporarily disconnect you from the network"
    "Proceed with installation now?"

I did not know so I just said "yes" and it installed Oracle VM....

[Some history of the computer itself--as I mentioned I'd have to say it somewhere here so you know what has been going on...still considered a "newbie" to Windows 10....yes its been a while since I replied here

I had to do many things before Windows 10 was ready for Oracle Virtual Box

Today, just copied backup; for first time...verified it..all looks ok (did it twice to be certain)

    8 hrs each time

    Lots of data

And then I had to change screen and finally keyboard as both were not working well from the old Windows 7 laptop so I got all items designed from Dell and Microsoft to work with Windows 10 specifically (x64 too)

--------end of the boring History stuff--which I gave just in case I did something wrong that is causing the Oracle VirtualBox to behave differently...and only show me x32 choices for my x64 machine!]

    Thanks for suggestions everyone!

I used to use VMware, but I think all VMs work much the same.

Product key - the VM is just like a physical computer and the same rules apply ie a retail serial can be reused if not already in use, system builder/OEM probably not.

64 bit guest - some answers here .

Does it sap power - yes. You have 2 pcs on 1 set of hardware. If you allocate 4GB ram to guest, host has 4GB less to use. CPU intensive apps on guest or host will affect the other.

Do I create an iso - on VMware, to install guest I'd load a full version iso (eg Windows 7) into the VMware virtual DVD drive. When you run the VM it starts to load the OS, just like a real pc.

    my $0.02

For VirtualBox to support a 64 bit client 3 conditions must be met, even if the host is 64 bit.
    1. The CPU must support Virtualization, referred to by Intel as VT-x. It appears that your computer uses a compatible CPU.
    2. It must be enabled in the BIOS. It may appear in the BIOS under a variety of names. Manufacturers sometimes have the option disabled by default. It cannot be enabled any other way.
    3. It must not be in use by some other software, such as Hyper-V. It is also used by some security software.

Ok! I think I can mark this solved after I post the following!

    Hi Everyone!

    I'm back!

    Successfully followed your advice !

    Lmiller7:
Great! I saw it was becoming more complicated than I remembered so I finally found someone [Geek Squad Help Desk who knows Oracle Virtual Box] sharing computer online during the install itself to help me tweak things...and they showed me where in my computer the INTEL Virtualization enable switch was located....it was set to disable...part of the reason I could not get any new OS to install even with Oracle Virtual Box installed!
I still needed all of the great help I received from this web site to know what questions to ask and what to look for on the Help Desk remote computer sharing...its just that little bit of confidence and knowledge I was missing that I got from everyone here...

    And for badcrc:
Thanks for making things clear! I found out I had a x32 bit unused Disk in my Windows x64 retail package, so it was simple to use that and the Product Code was the original one on the box [which due to several re installs along the way over the years ] I no longer used so Microsoft let me register (so far...fingers crossed its only been two days!) and run the new Windows 7 inside the VM.

So did not have to do a .iso disk...

So did not have to figure out my Product Key all over again and contact Microsoft...

    So thanks for your $0.02....
was worth far more than that to get my Windows 7 back and running for those programs now and in the future that won't run under Windows 10 no matter what I did to install them!

I will also thank Ztruker on the other thread as well , but deserves a mention here for supplying the proper link to Oracle Virtual Box above (my first post here) to get started.

So I will mark this thread as solved!

    Thanks to everyone!

    Tenacious.
