Recommendation for video recorder app for my laptop

I record my dog while away, and I used the camera app but it records in MP4 and it becomes a large file if I'm gone for a long time. Then the camera stops recording and says it's because the file was getting large, even though I have a ton of space on hard drive.

Any recommendations? I don't need anything fancy, just a video recorder that does not have a size limit, and preferably able to use the wmv format.

    Hi,
I can't make any recommendations per se, but, if you Google "Turn your webcam into video surveillance", or,
search for webcams that have 'Motion Detection' built in, you'll be heading in the right direction.

I would actually like recording to
happen whether there is movement or not.

    Hi there

What's the source for the video
I have a SKY Q minibox and an Amazon fire stick (which has NETFLIX on it too)

I pass output into an HDMI splitter (HDMI 1 for the monitor and HDMI2 into a hardware capture device).

I also have an HDMI switcher so I can record what's coming off the SKY Q box or the Amazon fire stick

I record to external SSD connected to computer via USB3-->SATA. As it's 250 GB not likely to run out of space any time soon and there's no limit on file sizes.

(To get Netflix on amazon TV stick simply use apps2fire from any samsung phone or android tablet - installs perfectly).

The files are generated in m2ts format which KODI will play just fine - but there's any number of free video converters to convert to mp4/wmv or whatever. My hardware device will record full HD (1920 X 1080) and even when shown on a 52 inch TV looks 100% fine.

There are newer hardware video capture devices that record directly in mp4 etc - my one is quite old. You will need decent HDMI cables and the cheapest HDMI switch (chinese unbranded ones best) as the switch strips off any DRM and just passes video through !!.

So source devices---->HDMI switch--->HDMI splitter--->Monitor and hardware capture device.

The capture device has software in it for managing recording sessions.

This lot might be overkill for you but it works an absolute treat for me - especially as I can then copy the videos to discs where I can watch later when I don't have access to the amazon fire TV or the SKY Q minibox.

If you just want to record from the internet or computer itself -- not sure what's the best in this case. I want content off my boxes to play elsewhere e.g when in a hotel outside subscription area etc. I can do that from the recordings copied to HDD.

    Cheers

It sounds like the OP is capturing from their webcam.

VLC can do this - How to record your webcam with VLC - CNET . Just make sure to fill in your webcam resolution (e.g. "1280x720") in the Capture Device->Video Size field.

I don't know if there is a file size limit but assuming that you are writing to an NTFS/exFAT drive then there shouldn't be any limit.

I was wondering about using VLC. I appreciate the link to the how to. I will be using the webcam and microphone built in to my Acer Laptop. I assume I can find there names them listed in settings?

Thank you all for your replies.

I don't know how to get my settings to save in the VLC player, or do they only save when a recording is made? How do you choose a destination for a direct save? There appears to be no way to save the location wanted.
