    Software updates failing

    Hi All

My laptop seems to have a problem. It is a HP win 7 that I upgraded to Win 10 during the free update period.
It has worked fine until now. When I go to update any of the software I have installed to the latest version it fails to do it. It goes through all the normal steps and a new icon flashes on the screen for a nano second and that's it. So can anyone tell me the problem please or is it a trip to the repair shop.

    Cheers

Screenshots would be useful so we're on the same page.
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post. Thanks.

Have a look at your Reliability History e.g.
    Win key + S, Reli

Click on any red x's and click on the result below. Post a screenshot.

Try Appcrashview (free) - what does it tell you?

    software updates failing,, update

    Hi all

Many thanks for the replies. The software is any of them I try to update.

I think I have done the screen shots ok. I did three as I am limited to 5 and they should hopefully be attached.
We are now out of my comfort zone as I have not done this before.

I will download the prog suggested and try that and see what it says next

Not surprising- it takes its data from the same source and no program crashes are reported there. However, there are some worrying OS related crashes.

It would be interesting to know if the time of any of those corresponds to any failure you have seen. - or generate another failure and check that report again.

As before, could you post screenshots of a program you're updating just to see what you're doing at each stage, and as asked before, give a couple of examples?

For example, we have no idea if the update fails because:
    - the program fails to communicate with its site
    - the download fails
    - the update process fails

Meanwhile, please do some basic checks:
    1. First check your disk(s):
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (includes SSDs)
(This gives exceptionally good text comments)
Post a screenshot of its GUI using the Insert Image icon above your post.
If all disks are reported as good, continue.

    2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 | Tutorials
    or
How to read Event Viewer log for Chkdsk in Windows 10 [Tip] | dotTech

If ok, from an admin command or powershell prompt
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and post the summary result.

Are you using any particular firewall? VPN? Proxy?

Ok First things first. I am set up as the administrator on my laptop.

Thanks for the comprehensive set of steps to do next. As I am not used to delving into these sort of tasks it may take me a day or two to complete as I have to go out today so may not get it all done until Monday.

Thanks once again for the advice it is appreciated

    Cheers Edward

I hope I have uploaded these screen shots OK. I got messages saying that they were not proper image files but they seem to be there. Please note No 9 is an error I get every time I boot the LT and have had for some time but I include it just in case it is of use.

Hard disc sentinel said all was well as far as I could see.

My firewall etc is the standard Windows one plus I use Avast security as well.

I will do screen shots of updating asap but I now have to go out.

    Cheers Edward

Those look fine - await your SFC /SCANNOW result.

What does the screenshot of your desktop about datastate.dll relate to? What triggered that?

It's some part of some IOBIT program apparently..
    What is datastate.dll?

and IMF.exe seems to be IOBIT malware fighter.
