No sound when playing old .WAV files

I have a CD with WAV files on it which are dated in 1994. When I go to play them using Groove or WMP they look like they are playing but produce no sound. These sound files used to play long ago (I don't remember when). Other WAV files ripped from music CDs work OK. Any ideas.

Using WMP (Windows Media Player) the more modern WAVs ripped from music CDs work OK and produce sound. Using the same instance of WMP, the WAV files off the1994 data disk look like they are playing but produce no sound. Windows System sounds play OK and the Volume Mixer is on 100% for WMP.

Are the WAV files from back then of a different structure and the current codec can't interpret them?

OK, the problem is solved. I got a program called Media Info and displayed the media info of one not working and one that was working. There were differences. I'll outline those in a minute.

On closer looking at the disk it had three sets of files on it. They are all sounds from the Starwars movies up to 1994.

The first set had the attributes of 176.4kb/s, 22.05 kHz, 8 bits, 1 channel, PCM.

The second set had 705.6kb/s, 44.1kHz, 16 bits, 2 channel, PCM.

The third set (which produces sound) had 1411.2kb/s, 44.1kHz, 16 bits, 2 channel, PCM.

I was trying to play the first set and it wasn't working. Nor did the second set. The third set worked OK.

The README was a WRI file. Google tells me that Wordpad can open it and it did. A partial copy of the info in it explains about the audio files.

    What's In This Disk?
There are three types of .AVI files on the CD-ROM:
    1. 100k/sec. These are lower bandwidth files designed to be played back directly from single speed CD-ROMs. The lower bandwidth helps to compensate for reduced access times of the CD-ROM drive.
    2. 200k/sec. for double speed CD-ROMs.
    3. 300k/sec. These are high bandwidth files which will need to be copied over to your hard drive for satisfactory playback, unless you have a triple speed CD-ROM. (You don't need to copy over all the files -- just the ones you want to use.)
    4. 16bit/44k stereo .WAV files
    5. 8bit/22k mono .WAV files
    6. 16bit/44k stereo QSOUND .WAV files

    The QSOUND files played OK.

I'm having the same issue. A Windows 10 update changed something. It should play any & all wav files.
