    1. The system ignores my default program choice for opening jpg files. It used Photos until I uninstalled it. It now tries to use Paint 3D. I can't uninstall it. Is there a way to disable it?

The best I've got so far is to click on the jpg I want to display. I am then asked "How do I want to open this .jpg file?" and then have to click the required program (Paint Shop Pro 7).

You don't have to uninstall anything to be able to open jpegs in PSP7, you just have to tick the 'always use this app to open...' box before you click on the required program, as you did above. What is the executable for Paint Shop Pro 7? That is what needs to be entered on the ftype jpegfile line.

What do you get when you enter assoc .jpg ?

Thank you, that's interesting. Where can I find a download link for that update, and is there any reason why I shouldn't install it?

Sorry, I forgot that KB4467682 was withdrawn, apparently it made some Microsoft Surface models BSOD.

As a precaution, we have removed this optional update from Windows Update and Window Catalog to protect customers. Fixes and improvements will be available in the December 2018 security update release and will include a resolution for this issue.

The good news is that the December security update with the same fix for the inability to set file associations is due to be released on Tuesday 11th, 6pm UK time. Check for updates after that and you should get it.

I get what you do ......jpg=jpegfile

The executable in the application's folder is called psp. Right clicking it to read its properties says, of course, that it's an exe. So what would you enter ?

You would enter the fully qualified path to teh executable which I think is:

    ftype jpegfile=c:\program files\jasc software inc\psp.exe %1, %*

You may need to use quotes:

    ftype jpegfile="c:\program files\jasc software inc\psp.exe" %1, %*

I tried that Ztruker, and rebooted afterwards. Clicking on a jpeg file opens up the 'what program do you want to use' window. So I'm no further ahead.

Hopefully the next update will solve it.

Messed with this on a computer at work and had the same results you are seeing. It's the bug in 1803 and early 1809 (maybe). Once you update to the latest 1809 it will be fixed.

Well, the next update is out now. If you don't want to wait for it to be delivered automatically, click 'Check for updates' in Windows Update and you should get it straight away.
