Latest Skype doesn't have "quit" feature and will not really turn off!

OK, checked and the version downloaded (from MS Store) into my friend's computer last night is 8.34.01.82 which should be the latest. After two chat conversations with Skype Support (either AI or human, not sure, because in both chats got some incorrect info which humans could also provide, so re: Turing Test, could be human or AI) .... easily turning Skype TOTALLY off is problematic and unclear.

First this latest Skype 8.34.01.82 / App 8.34 does NOT have a right-click "quit" feature in Taskbar icon (not possible to have a Skype icon per se in Desktop, only an ersatz "Document-type" icon labeled Skype link). It can be "turned off" by clicking the red X box in upper rt. corner of the Skype window .... according to the AI/humans, a new "feature". Checking in Task Manager usually showed Skype off, that is, not present in running task list. However a few times there were TWO Skype tasks in "Suspended" mode with zero usage ("0") with an indication of some waiting input link, looking to me like an open radio channel (i.e., WiFi, which I have always turned off, using ONLY Huawei Mobile Partner over cellular data network through local Internet provider, prepaid). When I clicked "end task", then no Skype activity, "suspended" or not, showed up in Task Manager in subsequent on/off tests during that session.

The AI/human told me that the X-click was replacing "quit", but I see that is not always true. Is there any easy work-around way to simply get this latest version of Skype to QUIT now? My version, updated a month ago through Kaspersky STILL has the "quit" rt-click Taskbar icon option ....

Well, further checking on my HP w 1803 reveals that at least in this case the AI/human (Skype Support chat) was correct: BOTH the Taskbar Skype right-click "quit" option AND clicking on the red-boxed X in the upper rt. Skype window corner completely shuts down Skype every time (NO running tasks). However at least one time -- absent the Taskbar "quit" option" -- clicking the Skype window red-boxed X did NOT completely shut it down ("suspended" task).

    That needs further investigation ....

Today Kaspersky KIS automatically updated Skype now in MY computer HP EliteBook 840 G2 (OP above was re: my friend's new 840 G5). I have now prevented Kaspersky from doing such again, since this latest version 8.36.0.52 has the same evil dangerous "Design Feature" of NOT turning off: it has no "Quit Skype" option in the Skype Taskbar icon and clicking on the X in the upper-right corner of the Skype window leaves it running > Task Manager shows it using up to 40% CPU and has to be manually stopped with "End Task".

After reporting the issue with a live chat (person or friendly AI software) who said it would be passed on to the technical folks, I deleted Skype and re-installed version 8.31.0.92 (from my downloads) which works PERFECTLY sans this new "Design Feature" which would give anyone, incl. MS, other avenues into and out of my computer ...

    So ... be warned

Hmmmm, I do not experience this, in 8.36.0.52. When I hit the X in upper R corner, Skype shuts down and nothing running in Task Manager processes.; CPU now 6% with this browser running.

Unfortunately Skype is not on the list AND the older Skype I re-installed, version 8.31.0.92 does in fact EASILY turn off totally either by clicking the X in the Skype window or by rt-clicking Quit Skype in the Taskbar icon.

    Update: seems solved!

Well several times now Skype has updated itself from 8.31 (which I downloaded October 2018 and which does not have this issue) to 8.34 and which I have now several time uninstalled, cleaned out from the registry (except for 2 non-removable entries) and re-installed 8.31 from my downloads..

However, THIS last time when 8.34 was forcibly installed I re-checked and found that not only was "Quit Skype" there again and functioning in 8.34 (as well as by clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the Skype window) .... but Skype is then repeatably and totally TURNED OFF by so doing, not still running as a task shown in Task Manager.

I conclude that my several live chats with Skype Support asking them to present the issue to the technical folks, as well as likely the same warning to Skype from others has resulted in Skype FIXING THE PROBLEM.

Well, back to Square One in this B.S. MS "Design Feature"!!

Skype now auto-updates to 8.37 and will NOT stop (using 33.8% CPU after "turning off").. Must be manually turned off in Task Manager!

Have had to uninstall, clean registry then install 8.31 again which does NOT have this issue. Then in Live Chat reported issue which will supposedly be passed to the technical folks.

    Be Warned!

    NOT SOLVED (yet/again)

I'm not using the version from the AppStore, just the desktop version. If you go to settings/General in Skype do you see something like this.

Latest Skype doesn't have "quit" feature-skype.png

If you do then have a play around with the top three options.

Thanks. I am now again running 8.31 which DOES turn off. The next time it auto-updates to 8.37, etc., I'll first see if they fixed it, if not will try what you posted (in my 8.31 now, all those setting options are correctly off). If that doesn't work, will uninstall, clean the registry best I can (some entries are untouchable) and go back to 8.31 till they fix it as they finally did to fix the same problem in 8.34.

MS Redmond coders' joke: "It's a Design Feature"

We shall see what ensues .....
