Files not opening with correct app

I have Media Player Classic (MPC-HC) as my default app for opening various video files (MP4, AVI, etc). But it no longer works. When I d-click such a file type in Windows File Explorer, it always opens with the Films & TV app.

I've reset it in vain several times by using Open With and choosing 'Always Open...'.

If I then use Open With again, the setting is no longer made, i.e. there is no checkmark in 'Always Open with...'.

How do I get the correct d-click program association to stick please?

What version does Winver say you have? If it's 1803 17134.407 then there is a known issue: "After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps."

    This is a fix for this in today's Cumulative Update KB4467682 Windows 10 v1803 Build 17134.441 - Nov. 27 - Windows 10 Forums

The same issue exists in 1809, but there is no cumulative update for that yet. I'd expect one soon, by next 'Patch Tuesday' (Dec 11th) at the latest.

As above, plus, have you also tried re-setting them using the method shown here:

@Bree: Many thanks, that is indeed my current version. Installing KB4467682 right now.

OK, needs a restart, which I'll do later.

@das10: Thanks, great link, hadn't seen that before.

    Terry,

If you ever need to adjust file associations despite Windows' attitude problem, you can use NirSoft FileTypesMan

Thanks Denis, looks good, duly downloaded. I have several NirSoft tools but that’s a new one.
