The way it was also done prior to WinToUSB was to apply the Install.wim to USB using DISM...What wintousb does is allow you to boot 100% windows installation from a USB drive which is a 100% clone of your current windows installed on your internal HDD/SSD.
I would assume one could backup Current OS partition and then restore that partition to USB as a Clone

that doesn´t work either.
The current upgraded version of wintousb does actually work so there´s no scam involved in this.
Just a shame that a decent product suddenly stops becoming freeware. However I suppose we all have to eat these days.
Please don't go the same way with your excellent recovery disks -- suggestion why don't you also do a wintousb type of thing that works if you have enough spare time.
Your recovery disks have saved me endless amounts of time in the past --so a big thanks anyway.

It does actually work
BUT : if you want to say upgrade windows to a newer version (from say 1803-->1809) then you really have to as the web site says buy the upgrader version as well.
Now that to me seems a bit like "too much of a good thing " for the deveoper.
You if you have sape media just create your windows / update on conventional medai first and then use the wintousb to create your wintogo type of device.
I'm not against people making a profit - but this seems to be verging on greed -- charge people ok for software but using 2 pieces of software where 1 worked before !!!!
I'm also a commercial guy -- but I draw the line at "Greed" even if the new version does what it says on the tin -- 29 USD I don't mind too much but 40 USD for both peces of software -- sorry guys,.

There are many hidden restrictions in WintoUSB tool that prompts you to buy a license key. I think this is disgusting. At first I couldn't find a alternatives, but later I found a good tool that can do everything that WintoUSB do and even better than WintoUSB. It's AnyWingo, developed by SysGeeker.

You really don't need any third party tools at all to make a WindowsToGo usb flash drive. You can do it easily with just diskpart and the dism /apply-image command.
You can get the installation file here, then contact them to ask a license key for free via email, they will give you one but you need to help them to test the software.

I did it this way in the end -- thanks for the idea which came from you -- couldn't remember the exact /dism commands so a bit of googling took me here which essentially is what you were telling me to do with some command examples -- I can remember a whole slew of Linux commands but Windows powershell isn't my speciality !!! --anyway it worked.

I recently made a live W10 (Windows to GO) using this SW.

It's on a small, 120GB SSD connected thru USB 3.1 to SATA adapter. As it's an SSD + USB 3.1 it boots relatively fast (about 30 seconds) and is only marginally slower than on SATA mounted SSD same make and model where my Insider version resides. As I used first virgin 2004 version ISO it also updated to latest.
It's very simple and can do even more. I think it's worth checking out. Also tried on USB2 stick of 32GB but it took forever to install and windows to start. My MB also has USBc 3.1 3rd gen port which should work even faster but I don't have SATA interface for it. With it it should work just as fast as with SATA mounted SSD.
Also a hint for creating a WindowsToGo: partition the disk using MBR. Create a FAT32 system partition (I just do 100 MB). Mark the FAT32 partition as active. Use the /f BOTH option of bcdboot to write the bcd to the FAT32 system partition. Your WindowsToGo drive will then be universally bootable in both legacy BIOS and UEFI.
