CCleaner c5.49.6856 producing flyout ads for 'Black Friday'

I'm on the Portable version 5.49.6856 ( 64-bit) and just now started getting these annoying Black Friday ads popping up in the notification area every time I start CCleaner64.exe

The good news, after some Piriform forum googling, is I am able to remove them by creating an outbound firewall rule to block any outgoing traffic from the CCleaner.exe, and not the one I'm actually running, CCleaner64.exe.

Perhaps this has already been discussed here, but I didn't see it.

For those NOT interested in using CCleaner...

...well here's another reason to continue not to ;o)
I hope this is not a breach of forum rules, but I did not find any thread started on this, and thought it important enough to share. I am getting these flyouts too, and have been careful to remove all checkmarks from the various settings and privacy options CCleaner have been putting in their latest releases; and removing the sneaky "Emergency Updater" startup task via AutoRuns.
I cannot find a scheduled task triggered by running CCleaner. I will try starting it with my internet connection closed. Is this coded into the software itself?

One of a thousand reasons I do not use it.

I use OneClickFirewall to prevent CCleaner from connecting to the internet.

I use V .40 and have it blocked from updating with my firewall. This version does not do stuff like the new ones.

    I was wrong...

I was wrong the outbound firewall rule solution does not work.

I would be surprised if shutting down your internet connection didn't fix it..

For me it was easier to just set up this outbound firewall rule which immediately became effective:

CCleaner c5.49.6856 producing flyout ads for 'Black Friday'-ccleaneroutboundadblock.jpg

    Steps:

    1. Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Windows Defender Firewall > Advanced Settings > Outbound Rules

    2. Right hand panel > New Rule...

    3. Radio button "Program" > next

    4. Radio button "This program path:" ( supply C:\path\CCleaner.exe) > next

Note: it's important that this be the path to where your CCleaner.exe resides not CCleaner64.exe

    5. Radio button "Block the connection" > next

    6. Check all boxes > next

    7 . Supply a "Name:" > finish

@Farvatten - Closing off the internet did stop them, but I also noticed they didn't seem to happen every time I opened CCleaner, especially if I had expressly dismissed the flyout by clicking on the 'x' closer.

@JoseyWales, @Polo6RGTI - Thanks for the heads up on firewall suppression, but I am very curious since I noted that I am using CCleaner portable, no CCleaner installation was used, and the only file on my machine is CCleaner64.exe. That seems to indicate that this behavior is coded into the program itself, and not a task scheduled in installation, or a startup task running in the background. Which begs the question,

What else is CCleaner doing when I run it?

Thanks a lot Piriform founders for selling out to the devil.

Hmmm... Curious... I wonder if my success is due to the fact I'm using the free portable version? I was getting the fly outs each and every time regardless of my [x]ing them out.

Curious why you don't also have the CCleaner.exe next to the CCleaner64.exe from the zip file. My Task Scheduler task to kill the CCleanerSkipUAC calls it, and is generated by the advanced setting check box.

@Farvatten - I guess when I decided to try the portable version, I just copied the CCleaner64.exe into a ProgramFiles directory, and pinned to quickstart from there. The only CCleaner file I have on the machine in question is the single executable. I could find no scheduled tasks, no sneaky startups. Also, I had decided to do away with the CCleanerSkipUAC startup task, so that can't be it. It seems to be behavior called into play by the CCleaner64.exe file. I don't know enough about firewalls and internet connections to figure out whether this is just a 'phone-home' thing, or something more. I hope sharper minds than mine can figure it out, but I will probably give up on CCleaner for good. Now I need to find another way to uninstall all the UWP apps W10 installs, and refuses to allow us to uninstall using Windows.

I was wrong... the outbound firewall rule does not stop the flyouts.

I was wrong, turns out it was a combination of wishful thinking and a comedy of errors, and the fact it didn't work for you made me wonder why and go back and more rigorously test this outbound firewall rule solution.

Apparently when I start CCleaner the first time after having running the 'Cleaning' Option the flyouts will appear twice in row with each start then stay away as long as I don't run the 'Cleaner' option again. Once I run the 'Cleaner' Option then I'll get the ads again, twice in row and then no more as long as I don't run 'Cleaner' again.
Running the 'Registry' option doesn't seem to trigger it.

Clearly the best way to have these flyouts disappear is to never ever run CCleaner again.

Like you and others I've lost all confidence in what at one time had been a decent product.

Yes, I had this happen to me when I ran CCleaner 5.49 yesterday.

So far, disconnecting from the Internet before running CCleaner seems to have stopped the 'flyouts' (I temporarily disable the Network Adapter in Network and Sharing).

I had already got into the habit of disconnecting from the Internet before installing or updating CCleaner these days.

So, one must now ask - what sort of 'sneaky' connection is going on in the background to allow these ads to appear? I always disable and remove the 2 scheduled tasks CCleaner creates when it is installed or updated and as well as deleting the CCleaner 'emergency' Updater in Program Files/CCleaner, untick 'Smart Cleaning' and also untick the box for sending 'anonymous' data in the Privacy settings.

I really would like to dump CCleaner completely but I also find it useful for removing Windows 10 apps that Windows won't let you remove by normal means.

Oh, I've just opened CCleaner twice in a row now (connected to the Internet, of course) and the Black Friday ad has appeared both times before I even had a chance to do anything else with the program.
