Is AbiWord actually running before trying to open a document you've created? If it's only one file could be it got corrupted somehow.

Yes. I've tried accessing the document both through Documents & AbiWord & get the same message. The latest v of AbiWord is 3.0.2. If I delete the current v2.8 & install the newer v3.0.2 is it likely I'll lose the prior stored docs?

You don't "delete" programs, you use the Uninstall the program furnishes or in Setting, Apps uninstall it. Most times the program will Upgrade what is already installed. No, you shouldn't lose any documents, especially if using the default Folder location of Documents in C:\Users\YOURNAME.
