Set up as described, immediately after the capture I get a Save As dialogue.

As for it failing part way thru scrolling, your experience may differ. For example, I'm using build 1709, tried with Waterfox (Firefox derivative). All sorts of possible differences that might have some impact, I suppose.

Scrolling capture seems to be one thing that can easily be made to fail - one person finds one tool ok, another, not.

While all the FREE screen capture tools are great, the best part is they're FREE, I myself use SNAGIT, made by Techsmith. NO, it's not free but the best thing is you can capture video's as well as screen capture and scrolling captures. I've been using this software for years and sometimes the video capture can be quirky but all you have to do is send an email to their tech support and they'll tell you how to fix it, usually within an hour or so. It comes with a separate editor and you can do all kinds of things with it but it is not a photo editor like PSP or Photoshop. They just came out with a new version, which I haven't gotten yet and they've added more stuff to it. You can have Snagit start automatically at startup so you don't have to go looking for an icon or app to start your program for capture. It's just an idea. Go check it out, can't hurt and no I'm not employed by Techsmith who makes the program. I just prefer it over the free stuff and I have tried free capture programs. As a matter of fact, I have one on my laptop, can't remember the name but it works, but I don't use my laptop very often so it's ok for that.

Quality software seems to be a lost art.
"Works sometimes" seems to be the current metric.

xpac5896: Maybe I should buy a newer version of Snagit?
The old version started giving problems with scrolling captures. (And anyway I've lost the software and cannot install the old one.)
Which version are you using, and how much does it cost?

currently I am capturing with mouse and every time I need to capture a rectangular section I need to use mouse to start from a point and pull it down.

It's very troublesome. Especially when I often need to capture and save screen , of approx. the same size.

I don't need exact dimension of capture area, only approx. dimension is fine.

any screen capturing software where it provides a pre-defined size where I can more easily to capture a rectangular area? For example, every click it already gives me a rectangular size and let me choose where to capture and then just another click to finish?

    Any recommended software?

Hello :) @Tsw88 i'd like to recommend Obs Studio, Open Broadcaster Software.
    Active community here
    Huge collection of plugins here

I personally use Obs Studio both for streaming & recording video of anything i have on my system.
Not sure there is a better capture software out there :)
Obs can basically handle anything you want.
Add streamlabs to ur obs and it becomes so much more powerful...
Maybe you have no need of streamlabs but just wanted to mention it :)

As others have recommended, i too recommend sharex
ShareX is really nice, but maybe it's more for creating .gifs
I know you can navigate to:
    > Task setting > screen recording >
screen recording options | And change the video codec.

I personally use 'Lightshot'....it's free and very easy to use. You simply hit the 'print screen' key and drag the cursor around the area you wish to take a screenshot of...or a 'full screen screenshot'.
    Works with Windows/Mac

Found my Snagit 10 installer. It's old but it's good. And it's working. Yay!

Good for you @margrave55. I just upgraded my copy of Snagit to the 2019 version. If you can buy an upgrade, that costs from $19.95 to $24.95. If you buy it new these days, that costs $49.95. Yow! An ongoing ticket to ride is a benefit of MVP status, fortunately.
It is a pretty good program. I've been using it for publication stuff since the 1990s, if memory serves correctly (that's a long time ago! ;-).

    Hi there

    @EdTittel

If you do it that way (single screens one at a time) then what's wrong then with PRT-SCR, CTRL-V (to clipboard) open wordpad / word blank document, paste then in the wordpad / word doc re-size and use standard snipping tool for your capture shot -- will grab context menus etc.

However I think Op wanted something like a continuous screen capture / record until stop requested.

I think Powerpoint will actually do this if you have office

powerpoint screen capture - Google Search

For recording movies etc I have a hardware capture device with an HDMI splitter which works fine (SKY boxes inc SKY Q and Amazon fire tv).

    Cheers

    Good point @jimbo45
Once these threads get going it's too easy to forget the original questions or premises on which they're founded. Thanks for bringing us (me) back to earth.
