Anyone care to comment on the safety of changing ports in Utorrent? This youtube video does indeed speed up downloads. There are other tweaks that are made and if anyone is familiar with those changes and would care to comment it would be most appreciated.

Normally you change ports as a lot of ISP block or reduce bandwidth for p2p

To be honest changing the port in utorrent does not speed up your download speeds at all.
To get better speeds in utorrent there are a few things to think about.
1. Seeders of the torrent you are downloading.
2. Your own speed from ur ISP.
3. Are you using Fiber, Coax or Adsl / Vdsl ? ( This impacts on the download speeds )
4. What client do you use for torrents? Some clients perfom better then others.
5. How old is the torrent?
6. The health of the hdd ur downloading to.
7. If the connection you have is adsl, if you upload while you download, speeds will be affected.
Drexie Tv in the yt vid is uing uTorrent v 3.5.4, and that tells me alot about his knowledge.
You should not take his advice, nor should you use this version of uTorrent.

But to answer your question about the danger of changing a port in uTorrent.
There is none :)
You change port in uTorrent in case you are not connectable to other peers.
Or if the port that the client is using is busy with another program.
I did not watch the video but Utorrent has an option to randomize the port on each startup, It is disabled by default.
Options > Preference > Connection > Check box to randomize
I have never changed the port but I would probably use this option instead of picking my own port.
I think, that the video shows the worst settings, aside from the point, that uTorrent is the worst client.
A golden rule: Limit the upload speed to 80% of your bandwidth, that might actually improve the download.
Max number of connections, the less is more, too many may alert ISP and force him to block it. 200 is fine.
Randomizing the port, sometimes ISP can block "an attack" (too many connections) by blocking the port.
Not to mention the security, using a different port each time you run it, adds a few more variables.

Sorry, when you say "force him to block it" are you referring to the ISP blocking something or the person who uploaded the torrent? Does it matter if I am using a VPN? If I am using a VPN doesn't the ISP just see download activity rather then specifically what is being downloaded. Thanks

Thanks for the input. I just wanted to point out that by following the video with my VPN on and utorrent 3.5.4 my Ethernet connected download rate has increased to between 3 - 5 MBs/sec up from 1.5 MBs. I am not at home now but I believe that's what it is that is measured in Mega Bytes. Thanks.
Aside from the huge amount of ads there is in uTorrent v3.x It performs worse compared to v2.x
I would not recommend any version above uTorrent v2.2.1,
as this version of the client is free from bloatware, riskware, cryptocurrency miner ect.
uTorrent v3.x has also been reported to not report correct stats back to the tracker.

Here is a old forum topic about the riskware that was installed with uTorrent client v3.x
Can i ask what speeds you get from ur isp ?
by either running a speedtest, or just simply download something from steam.
Also the increase in ur speed could have been temporary due to some of the facts i mentioned in my first post :)
However i am glad ur getting higher speeds :) No one wants to have early 2000 internet speeds ^^

Not at home now and may not be able to answer your questions until tomorrow however my uTorrent 3.xx the GUI is clean.No ads no asks to upgrade. There is a fix to do that on youtube. Since I believe you have indicated that you are not a fan of the program the fix might not apply to you but if you are interested in seeing it and cannot find it on youtube let me know and I can take a look and see I can locate it again.
