Agreed, Winamp should have been left to die. Foobar 2000 and AIMP are far better apps.

Yaaay! Winamp is back! Now if only the MP3 tag service was back again, was the best and detected even things downloaded from YT!

    Hi there

still using the OLD one which works -- will give the new one a whirl.

What I actually like specifically about the OLD Winamp is that it uses Gracenote DB for tagging CD's when you rip them. Now while there are loads of decent music DB's out there to get CD / other track data off - these are geared much more to people who go for music on spotify, iTunes etc -- I like a lot of Classical music some of which is quite eseoteric (away from the 3 big B's -- Beethoven, Bach and Brahms -- I like those too of course) -- Gracenote invariably finds the data and tags the tracks just fine.

What I tend to do with any music CD that comes along is rip the thing to an audio iso - so I have say music_cd which has tracks numbered trk1.cda, trk2 cda etc. Then feed that into winamp and the tracks are nicely tagged!!! and I have a backup copy of the CD as an iso.

I don't need to make the iso but I like to keep them as archive -- if I need to re-burn a CD then the ISO will do it just fine again.

Like all these things use what is good for you -- I assume though the vast majority here probably aren't that interested in Classical music so the Gracenote DB might only be of passing interest.

I have a part time music biz making bespoke vinyl for people - they sometimes want a CD as well so the WINAMP tagging works very well. - My I.T stuff now is generally part time contracts no more than 3 days a week and usually for around 3 - 6 months per client. Suits me just fine as I concentrate on the other stuff too.

    Cheers

    Hi folks

I see the new one has no cddb (music tagging) yet so pretty well useless for me while the old one works just fine

For Gracenote this is the sort of thing it does e.g in cars etc.

    Gracenote | Music Recognition (Auto)

The old winamp has the Gracenote api built in --

some developers on this site might be interested in the API's to call the music recognition service

Web API | Gracenote Developer Music + Auto APIs

My coding days are long over though -- even if I had any to start with !!!!

Anyway here's old Winamp working just fine on Win 10 X-64 version 1809.

I use foobar2000 for mp3 etc. and XMPlay for tracker music.
