New Winamp!

Of course there are zillions of alternatives for PLAYING music - e.g VLC, KODI, MediaMonkey etc etc however for tagging and ripping the old Winamp was just fine. Also Winamp is the only free player AFAIK that had the Gracenote music recognition service (CDDB) built in which for certain types of music is far superior to the other free music DB's out there.

Also unlike some music players it's simple to play by FOLDER rather than have to create wretched playlists -- VLC and KODI also can do that just fine too.

I think the purpose of this thread was to appeal to users of WINAMP that the project is still alive and kicking - rather than discuss alternatives - of which there are of course many and suitable for a lot of people -- as always YMMV.

Not getting into details of alternatives here -- apart from the fact that none of the alternatives use the Gracenote CDDB -- which as I pointed out in my post was the main reason why I still use Winamp when ripping / tagging classical music -- no other music service / database recognition service even comes close to it and also I prefer playing via folders rather than via playlists.

For example how would any of your alternatives found tagging for this : !!!



I tagged with Winamp on Windows then moved to my music folder(s) on my NAS.

I can't disagree at all on PLAYING music but none of you have addressed the actual reason I still like Winamp -- the fact that tagging via GRACENOTE cddb for relatively obscure classical music is so far streets ahead of anything else that these are non options for that purpose.

Once the music has been tagged - then there are zillions of decent apps -- often I just copy the files (after tagging) that I want to a phone and play with VLC / KODI for android or similar.

As a player Winamp isn't too bad but there are better ones out there -- personally I like VLC as there are a decent load of manual adjustable sound settings (even on the android version) available - but tagging the original music in the first place is the problem - and this is where WINAMP (the old pro version - still reigns supreme !!!).

Great news! Winamp takes me back to the 90s in a new way. The first MP3s I downloaded only played on Winamp. Winamp is my favorite and I still use it to this day. It just has a lot more features than other players. For fans and folks all old skins, plugins, etc. still available on http://www.mywinamp.com
