    I should have written "I still cannot change its default to 7-zip by normal means".
    Right, with solution at post # 52 you will be able to change its default to 7-zip by normal means i.e. right click properties within file explorer,

    Everyone is mistaken (i think, mind is fuzzy, kept up all night, grandma goin crazy, sad really); I don't use 7zip as the SOLE application that I can't assign as default program for 7zip/zip files (by using the 7zip/zip file's internal properties menu), I used it as an example, as a few other programs (vlc media player and windows photo viewer for starters) work (or don't work in this case) the same

    I found that the following commands work for both an existent extension and a nonexistent one.

    assoc .abc=(abc)
    ftype (abc)="C:\anyfolder\anyprogram.exe" "%1"
    yes, it works !

    I declare I had a dunce cap moment at this post and long before it; I completely forgot I had winaero tweaker, and one of its tweaks was to restore the windows photo viewer app; checking out how to do so without winaero tells you to open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Photo Viewer\Capabilities\FileAssociations and create the following string values

    ".tif"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".tiff"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".cr2"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".jpg"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".wdp"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Wdp"
    ".jfif"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".dib"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".png"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".jxr"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".bmp"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".jpe"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".jpeg"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
    ".gif"="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"

    so whatever command-line process windows usually goes through to create associations to windows photo viewer by the properties window is bungled up; make these entries, run the restore windows photo viewer reg file from the tutorial on tenforums, or download winaero tweaker and run this tweak and one file association problem should be solved

    ill report this to the windows feedback hub, it'll help, I know it

    This article gives MS's confirmation of the association problems in 1803, and a Powershell script (treat with due caution) to rectify the situation:

    I reset my default apps back to microsoft recommended, used the script, and reset my computer; so what's meant to happen? I tried setting defaults for the .zip file to 7zip, no go, but I could select winrar just fine (even without using winrar's inbult file association settings)

    When I tried using filetypesman to set 7zip back to the default handler for .rar files, my changes didn't apply, winrar is stuck as the default handler for .rar files; uninstalling winrar set the .zip file extension back to windows explorer though, so that helped somewhat; is this script really working for anyone else, or am I still getting something wrong? And yes, I had to set the execution-policy in powershell to unrestricted to run the script

    Today's cumulative update KB4467682 for 1803 "...Addresses an issue that prevents some users from setting Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps."

    I can confirm that I can now set 7-Zip as default for .zip files in 1803 build 17134.441.

    I have installed build 1903 and now I try to associate *.txt to Notepad++.
    There are 2 problems:
    a) I can't choose Notepad++.exe in the association control panel (Windows only allows to choose "Editor", "Wordpad" or something from MS Store)
    b) "Open with" right click entry let me browse & find Notepad++.exe, but doesn't offer "always open with"

    What can I do in Win10 build 1903?
