    @trogne
    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32>assoc .flv
    File association not found for extension .flv

    C:\Windows\system32>assoc .avi
    .avi=WMP11.AssocFile.AVI

    C:\Windows\system32>ftype WMP11.AssocFile.AVI
    WMP11.AssocFile.AVI="%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:8 /Open "%L"
    What commands should be run in order to change the default app for both ".flv" and ".avi" to the following app?
    "D:\The KMPlayer\KMPlayerPortable.exe"

    @Matthew Wai, it says "File association not found for extension .flv".

    You have to create a handle for .flv first :

    assoc .flv=flv123
    ftype flv123="D:\The KMPlayer\KMPlayerPortable.exe" "%1"

    to change file icon :

    Example, for a Python .py file :

    In registry :
    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Python.File\DefaultIcon

    Set that to empty.

    This will take the default icon of the program you made the association. Notepad2 in my case.

    @trogne,
    I found that the following commands work for both an existent extension and a nonexistent one.

    assoc .abc=(abc)
    ftype (abc)="C:\anyfolder\anyprogram.exe" "%1"

    Did anyone try KB4462933 (OS Build 17134.376) to see if it happens to fix the issue?

    from what I can see in the news folder for that CU update, a few people are STILL having that file association issue even after installing it; so I guess Microsoft didn't fix it yet

    yesterday, I took a fresh downloaded win10 iso, did a fresh install onto a spare laptop (debug purposes), and downloaded and installed the latest 1803 cumulative update and minor updates (flash update, malicious software removal tool, etc..)

    I refute the claims that nothing is wrong with kb4462933, as even on a fresh install, I still couldn't change file associations, even when assigning 7zip to open .7z files through the file's property window and not 7zip's internal association menu

    Have you reported it via the Feedback Hub? Would be useful to have a link to up vote.
