7Zip issues may be with the program, not necessarily Windows. I just installed it on Version 1809 and it added itself to the right-click context menu instead of the list of programs, doesn't show the .zip extension in Default apps. It's always been an issue, even with Macintosh, where the OS prevents certain things with competing third-party software.

    Hi,

I can't say if this is a windows issue or a 7zip feature but I found how to get it to work and i can now set the associaton for 7zip file/archive (and it works also for regular ".zip" files):

1 open 7zip as administrator (right click "open as administrator")

2 open tools -> options menu

3 add the type of file you want to associate using the plus (+) sign, for the current user or all users like below, then it will work as expected.

Everyone is mistaken (i think, mind is fuzzy, kept up all night, grandma goin crazy, sad really); I don't use 7zip as the SOLE application that I can't assign as default program for 7zip/zip files (by using the 7zip/zip file's internal properties menu), I used it as an example, as a few other programs (vlc media player and windows photo viewer for starters) work (or don't work in this case) the same

as for the feedback hub, I will use it, but this seems to have been reported to the microsoft community/support team (and I'll assume to the feedback hub as well), so my feedback hub report feels to me like it'd be pointless if its been reported multiple times already

only thing I haven't tried is downloading a 1703 windows 10 iso using the Windows ISO Downloader, or from the techbench and downloading KB4458469 and installing both on the laptop to see what it be, but internet speed at this post-time is really spotty, so it'd take days on the speed right now

7-zip as default zip handler is fine in 1709. I can swap between explorer/winrar/7-zip.

Windows File Explorer does not support RAR, so there is no competition, but I still cannot change its default to 7-zip.

If you are interested in "assign as default program for 7zip/zip files (by using the 7zip/zip file's internal properties menu)", there is a working solution at post # 52.

I should have written "I still cannot change its default to 7-zip by normal means".
