Actually, I found someone with the same problem on this thread. QTTabBar Updates. I'm gonna try the solution they came up with.

I tried the solution from the link I quoted. The closed tabs get restored but they get closed again whenever I click on the Control Panel tab. Checking the setting you mentioned didn't work as well. I'll try some other stuff.

How are you launching the control panel? Ah- you mean if you open a new tab and then click control panel in the tree below- yes, that closes file explorer.

From the Start Menu. Launching it from QT's Group also closes all other tabs and reopens Control Panel in a new window.

With file explorer open, if I then open Control Panel from Open Shell start menu I simply see
    QTTabBar Updates-1.jpg

See amended post above where using Qttabbar tabs closes explorer- as i think you are describing.

Control Panel just opens in a new window when using Open Shell?

As I said and showed, yes.

The tab issue appears to occur when the Control panel is selected but is not open as the first tab. For example, this does NOT crash explorer and simply opens a 3rd tab:

That's still a sucky workaround but thank you!

I've found a "solution". Using 1.5.0.0 Beta 2, which is from 2011 by the way, Control Panel opens on a new separate window. It also manages to catch all new Explorer windows that the new versions couldn't like those opened with Win + E. I don't use qttabbar's many features that much so the only downside for me is the lack of customization for the appearance.

Surprised to see that with all of QTTabBar's customization options, the New Tab "+" button is non-customizable.
