I am able to launch control panel in many ways. If I have a file explorer window with several tabs open, and open control panel using a shortcut on the desktop or start menu or opening the start menu and searching for "control panel" and executing, the existing tabs disappear and a new control panel window opens. However, I can also run control panel through a shortcut on the desktop right click menu from @Brink tutorial. In this case, a separate, new window with control panel opens but the existing window with multiple tabs remains open.

Conversely, if I have no windows/tabs open, open control panel through the shortcut on the desktop or start menu, or from start menu search, or from the desktop background right click, and then open a new window/tab, the new window/tab opens in a separate window from the control panel window previously opened.

The same effect described above is observed whether control panel is opened directly in icons or category view.

    Does this info help?

    Thanks!
If you don't have a solution yet, try this hack:

QTTabBar Options > Window > General tab
check both boxes: "Restore tabs when a new windows opens" and "Only for the first window"

You may end up with more File Explorer tabs and/or windows than you want in some cases depending on what you do (how may times you open control panel), but you should not lose tabs or windows.

I don't think the fault lies with QTTabBar, I think Control Panel is becoming more and more a convoluted collection of applets slowly being transformed into the Settings app!
It's not fully integrated with File Explorer as it was in the past!

I found that your method usually keeps the other open tabs. If it's the first tab of a group, the control panel replaces it, but all the tabs seem to stay open. If you have one of your other tabs open, then control panel replaces that tab. Using Alt+Shift+Left arrow will revert to opening that tab.

However, I also found that you must have QT > Options > Tab > Remove original tab when creating new window from it UNchecked. In fact, sometimes, but not always, having only that option unchecked seemed to work. However, it wasn't consistent.

I might add that because I use an app called Launchy to launch various apps & the control panel, the control panel launches independently of QtTabBar.

Opening Quick Access opens Last Tabs Open when QTTabBar is closed

It used to be that I could click a link to open Quick Access. All of a sudden, if I do the following:
    1. Have any tabs open when I close File Explorer.
    2. Reopen Quick Access

then any tabs that were open when I did the first step, reopen. I don't know what setting, if any, changes this.

e.g. I want to open this:
    QTTabBar Updates-image.png

But if it was last closed like this:
    QTTabBar Updates-image.png
opening Quick Access, gives me this:
    QTTabBar Updates-image.png

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

    Edited:
Sorry. I found it. I made a change & forgot to change it back:

Leaving "Restore tabs when new window opens" unchecked solved it. I'll leave this post here in case anyone else has this problem. However, if the moderator feels it doesn't add anything, I'll remove it or the moderator could please delete it.

    Hi Steve:
I've programmed the side button on my mouse to a shortcut link that opens Quick Access. Of course, clicking that link would also opens Quick Access. I've edited my post above because I found the answer. Thank you for your response.

Error message when clicking a tab in a group

I have QtTabBar set up so that I can open 4 tabs in a group (typed too fast before edit...thanks @steve108). From time to time, when I click on a tab to open it, I get this error message:
    QTTabBar Updates-image.png
This time the tab was: C:\Users\Phil\Documents\Current Projects. It doesn't happen every time, but it does happen often enough to be irritating. I don't have any illegal characters, as far as I know. If I did, I would think Windows wouldn't let me name a folder/file with illegal characters.

Any ideas of why this happens...& only when several tabs are open?

    Thanks in advance.

    @phrab,
How often does the problem occur. I just created a group of four tabs and tried 3 times with no issues. I wonder if the space in your path name has any relevance.

Hard to say how often. I use the tabs in the group often. I get the message perhaps 1 in 25-30 times; so that’s every couple days.

QTTabBar = inconsistent, but I still like it despite its quirks.
