windows 10 photos will not let me change default

    Hi
In windows 10, Windows app “photos” will not allow me to change the default to another media viewer like VLC or Windows media player (my preference). It will only let me change to an editing program like Photo elements, or Paint.
I have removed Photo from windows but then it was grabbed by Paint and still would not allow me to change the default.
I have also tried the normal way to change to another program of Preferences, and change to, apply and ok, but Photo holds on like limpet mine.
I have also run System Restore to no avail except Windows Photo had been reinstalled.
I have also run a check through the command prompt to check for errors but that came back all ok.
I have now run out of how options to get rid of Photo as my picture viewer it’s not that I hate Photo its Just the Big Brother syndrome that I hate.
One other thing, If I open a picture, right click the “open with” it will open in my preferred program but reverts back to the picture default when closed.
Note: both the default Music app and the Video app I have been able to change to the Windows Media Viewer with no problems.
    Can anyone help me please?

VLC and Windows Media Player do not handle photos (jpg, png, gif, etc), they handle media files like avi, mpg, mp4.
Elements and Paint will handle photos so nothing is wrong, just a mis-understanding.

Unfortunately, I don't see any way to change it to something like Windows Photo Viewer (Windows 7 default) as it's not a choice in Windows 10.

I actually like the Photos app now that I've gotten used to it.

Hi Ztruker, thanks for your reply.
I have been using VLC and Windows media to view (only) both my pictures and videos for ages, I use Premiere Elements for editing both videos and pictures. I just don't like being manipulated by Microsoft into using their products, having said that, Windows Media is available from Windows accesories.

I'll be dipped. If I open VLC then click on Media, Open file, none of the picture formats are listed in the filetype drop down. I can drag and drop a jog on VLC and it opens which is new to me.

As for Windows Media in Windows accessories, that's Windows Media Player, not Windows Photo Viewer.

    Anyway, good luck.

If you open Window media Player you will find it can play music, videos and photos and I love it!!

    Hi,

If you do that twice it works! One more bug, I think.

First, you go as you've described using "Open with", navigating to desired program.
At this stage "Always use this app...." checked, has no effect.

After opening your file with desired program, click again on "Open with" > Choose another app > select desired program (which now appears on the list directly, no need to navigate to it) and also check the "Always use this app...." box, then OK.

    That's it.

I just submitted this feedback: Choose default apps by filetype missing browse button

Upvote it and maybe we'll get it fixed so you can use any app or program you want for a filetype.

Thanks guys for trying, however, I have today (are you ready) 1) spent one hour onto Microsoft Support via a texted conversation. All to no avail. 2) I was then passed to another woman (both were in Philippines) to have a two hour conversation with her trying to correct the problem. Problem still there. 3) She then downloaded and installed a complete new windows 10. saying " this should correct it, if not contact us again". I have been at this now for about 5 hours and there are still 5 updates to install.

The problem is still there, so it looks like I will just have to use the Photos App. I am well brassed off!!!!!!!!

    Thanks again
