Windows Media Player crashes when closed

    Hello,

Since the half of august I noticed there are APPCRASH events in the Reliability History every time I close Windows Media Player. I don't notice the crash of the program itself, but I can see the cursor showing a loading icon when closing the program. It even happens if WMP doesn't contain a music library.

    Here's the log (Dutch):
    Naam van probleemgebeurtenis: APPCRASH
    Naam van de toepassing: wmplayer.exe
    Versie van toepassing: 12.0.17134.1
    Tijdstempel van toepassing: 854a1b2d
    Naam van foutmodule: combase.dll
    Versie van foutmodule: 10.0.17134.112
    Tijdstempel van foutmodule: cdc43ef4
    Uitzonderingscode: c0000005
    Uitzonderingsmarge: 000f19ef
    Versie van besturingssysteem: 10.0.17134.2.0.0.256.48

I have tried the following but none of them fixed the issue:
    - Run the Troubleshooter of Windows Media Player Settings and Windows Media Player library
    - Delete the Media Player cache folder in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft
    - Delete cache and history files in the WMP settings- Run sfc /scannow and DISM commands; they didn't show any integrity violations or corruption
    - Disabling and enabling WMP (a reboot in between) in the Windows Features settings
    - Clean installed Windows 10 Pro 64x

Since the crash happens at closing WMP, it might have something to do with cleaning temp or cache files but I'm not sure.
I have attached a crashdump file.

What might possibly be the cause here?

I hope you have better luck! Just as a caution, how do you know the "WMP" is closing when you stated you didn't know it closed?

Thanks. Where did I state that? When closing WMP, it closes but then a crash occurs which is hinted by the cursor showing a loading sign next to it.

No one who could help me with this? I have clean installed Windows again and it is still occurring.

I noticed that the crash during closure happens only when I leave Windows Media Player open for a while, say a minimum of 10 minutes. I leave it open on the Albums page.

Perhaps someone could test this out?

Thanks a lot for confirming this. The log along with the codes are exactly similar to mine.

What did you do to reproduce this problem? And what are your PC hardware specs?

That is actually my own thread there 😁. I thought perhaps it was the nvidia driver causing this.

I'm not sure though and that's why I was wondering what your PC specs are and the software that is installed.

So I did a clean install of the 1809 update and unfortunately this problem still exists.

I have no clue whatsoever what is causing this.

    Hi,

There is a problem with 1809 and WMP, it's different but may be an association to your crash problem:

As spotted by Paul Thurrott, the update also breaks the seek bar in Windows Media Player when playing "specific files."

This is the kind of bug that leaves me scratching my head, wondering what changed to break such a thing, and why. The various old and new Windows media stacks are certainly complicated beasts, but it's not clear what the October 2018 Update even changed in this area. At least this time around, it doesn't seem that the bug was reported before 1809 actually shipped, though it's hard to be definitive about this given the difficulty in finding anything in the Feedback Hub bug reporting tool. Microsoft does promise to fix the bug, but the timeframe is vaguely open-ended: it will be "in an upcoming release."
