    Startup and Notification area

    Hello:

I have an old app, WinDates, that is superior to any calendar I know of, and I want to keep using it (no longer supported). It worked in Win 7. It also works in Win 10, but I cannot get it to start up when the computer starts up.

WinDates is correctly linked as is shown here:

    C:\Users\[User ID]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\WinDates.lnk

But, it does not start when I start Windows 10.

If I start WinDates manually, it appears, as in Win 7, in the Notification area (where I want it), and I can use it as usual. However, it does not show up in the group of icons that appear when I click the ^ icon in the Notification area. In fact, many icons that I could see and manage in Win 7 do not show when I click the ^ icon, and I do not know how to manage the Notification area anymore.

By the way, three other items in the Startup folder opens nicely when the computer starts.

Grateful for any thoughts what could prevent the startup.

    Hi Hans L

To manage Notification area, right click in a clear section of Task Bar, the click "Taskbar Settings". Settings will open. Scroll down the right hand side the major heading "Notification area"

As to your program have you tried a Scheduled Task. Click on Cortana, type Task Scheduler. Google has lots of info on scheduling tasks.

Hi, it works perfectly on my win 10 Pro 1709 - if I install it in compatibility mode.

If I install it without that, I get error messages e.g.
    Startup and Notification area-windates1.jpg
    Startup and Notification area-windates2.jpg

In XP SP3 compatibility mode I see no errors and get
    Startup and Notification area-windates-xp-sp3-1.jpg
(a prompt from an ancient utility trapping the attempt to create a startup option- as expected)

    Startup and Notification area-windates-xp-sp3-2-hide.jpg
    Prompt to hide to tray

There it is. In the notification area.

When I restart: it starts. And the icon is in the tray.

Missing items in the notification area:
    a. Sounds like you're running a bunch of old programs. You ma have further compatibility problems.
    b. Note this setting: you can enable or disable icons appearing there in Settings.

Ken, thank you. I now know how to manage the Notification area. And while I may use Task scheduler as a last resort, I will hold out a little longer on Startup.

I clicked the link in the Startup folder, and WinDates started fine. Why does Win 10 ignore this link out of the four links in the Startup folder when the computer starts? Does not seem to make sense.

Hope you or someone else have some additional thoughts on this.

Dalchina, I did not see your post when I responded to Ken.

I have Win 10 1803, which I believe introduced some additional headaches (but not sure).

My WinDates is already installed, of course, and there is probably a way to make it XP-compatible. I will check (if you know, please let me know). If not, I will reinstall.

    Thanks a lot!

Dalchinea, forgot. Had already, in Properties of the exe file, run the Compatibility Troubleshooter and set compatibility to Windows XP (Service Pack 3). I ran it again, and got the same recommendation. Will see if it helps.

Just wondering, what's unique about it? Sometimes old unsupported progs simply become unusable.

Nothing unique, just that manual ways of opening the app works, but not automatic at startup. Which, come to think of it, is somewhat unique.

Press the Windows and "R" keys simultaneously, type "taskmgr" into the "Run" box and click "OK". When Task Manager starts, click on the "Startup" tab and make sure the shortcut is listed and enabled.

Thanks everybody. I have followed your advice as closely as possible.

    A summary:

    • Uninstalled and reinstalled WinDates without a hitch

    • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\WinDates.lnk

    • Compatibility: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)

    • Notification area – Select which icons appear on the taskbar: WindDates enabled

    • Task manager – Startup: WinDates enabled

    • Manual start: WinDates icon appears in the Notification area

    • Computer start: WinDates icon does NOT appears in the Notification area

Obviously, manual start and automatic start work differently in Win 10. Or ...?
