QUESTION: How to make any app PORTABLE?

    Howdy, Members:

Does anyone have experience creating PORTABLE APPS (virtualized)...

(so one need not be dependent upon PortableApps.com or any similar portable resources.)

    • Compliant with Win 10
    • NO requirement to install apps to HDD first (as required by Cameyo and winRAR)
    • Procedure for keeping UPDATED (latest app version)

    If you do have experience...

    • What recommendations can you make?

Thank you in advance for prompt and detailed responses.

No experience, but PortableApps themselves seem to provide the necessary tools...
The PortableApps.com Launcher is a universal launcher to make almost anything portable. To make things portable, it needs to be told by a developer what to do. It gets this information from a file in the App\AppInfo\Launcher directory of a portable application package called AppNamePortable.ini, where AppNamePortable is the base name of the launcher executable.

There are lots of tools to do it and it's dead simple only thing to watch out for is it first does a capture of the installation but it can catch other things running if your not careful so you have to check or it may include your email in the app

Thank you, Samuria... but the point is... NO INSTALLATION.

Is there an online app or portable app that can create PORTABLE APPS without any need for installation?

    If YES... details please!

To make an app portable you need to capture its registry settings 'as installed' so you can recreate a temporary environment mimicking those settings for it to run in. Even if such exists, I'd be very wary of letting any online app have full access to my registry....

    HI Bree:

The point is... I am looking for ZERO access to Win 10 REGISTRY.

An app that normally has to be installed creates its own registry settings - these are required for it to function. To make it 'portable' you have to find all those registry change that happen when you install it, then wrap an environment around it that makes them appear to be there.

I don't see any way that's possible without first installing the app you want to make portable, the letting some sort of 'portable-maker' app read your registry. If you are worried about security, then install it in a VM - but you're going to have to let something access the registry or you can't know what the app needs to make it portable.

That is not what a portable app is.

A portable app may not installed but it may (or may not) write to the registry. There is no limitation to writing to HKCU - anything run by any (non administrator user) can.

This from the Rufus FAQ explains it in more detail
A portable application is an application which gives you the ability to carry and preserve your settings when moving from one computer to the next.

That's it. That's all a portable application does.

Thus, if you are expecting that portability implies anything about NOT writing into the registry on Windows, or not coming with an installer, you are very mistaken
So with that in mind what do you actually want to achieve? Stop programs writing to the registry at all? Even the current user bit? Bottom line is you can't as that is simply not how Windows authentication works.

What you could do is run a VM or a whole Windows to Go installation on a USB key but I'm only speculating what you are trying to achieve.
