How do I turn off Windows apps that I don't want?

First on my list is "Store". I have repeated told my firewall to always deny, but it keeps coming up. I know there are other Windows 10 apps that are just as pushy, and take up lots of CPU and bandwidth. What are they and how can I safely turn them off?

Not exactly what you are asking.
You asked for Windows built-in apps to be "turned off".
Here is the tutorial on how to "uninstall" specific Windows built-in apps.

    Uninstall Apps in Windows 10
    Use Option Two or Three.

P.S. You can always reinstall those you have uninstalled later on if you change your mind.

It may be what I want, but which programs are safe to remove? I definitely don't want Store, even though it says don't uninstall in the tutorial. Is there someplace that explains what each application does?

They are ALL safe to uninstall, if you don't use them.
It is recommended that you keep the Store app. Just leave it alone if you don't need it. It does not occupy much disk space.

Here is an article briefly describes each built-in app. The article is not up-to-date, but it should do.

It may be what I want, but I definitely don't want Store, even though it says don't uninstall in the tutorial, because then I won't be able to reinstall other apps. This is the main one I want gone.

As I've looked at this, though, I've come up with a few more Microsoft programs that are useless to me. Feel free to reply just by referencing numbers.

1-I also tried to remove "Groove Music" and the uninstall button is grayed out. I think I can do this from the power 2-shell but is there any needful reason to leave it?
3-Is it safe to remove Microsoft Messaging, or is it needed?
4-Is OneNote okay to remove? I noticed Camera, Microphone, Documents, and Background Apps all turned on.
Is this a necessary system file or just another app I never use?
5-Since I don't use Microsoft's email or calendar, will there be any detrimental effects if I remove them?
6-Ditto for Phone and Phone companion.
7-And finally, is there any reason to keep xbox and its associated programs?

    Thanks for any help.

I must have had two windows open with the same thread. Sorry about that. Store keeps trying to access the internet, and keeps popping up whenever i launch a Microsoft alternative. Very annoying.

As said in my post #4, ALL Windows 10 built-in apps are safe to uninstall.
Just use the Powershell tutorial mentioned in my post #2.

P.S. I have the feeling you and I are not using the SAME Windows 10 version or build.

    I am using Win 10 version 1803, Build 17134.191.
I am not on Insider Program.

I didn't see your reply before I posted the second time. As I said, I think I had two tabs open, thought I was replying once, but I guess I replied twice.

I'm on Win 10 version 1803, Build 17134.165. Close. There are some updates ready to install but I keep delaying

Right click on the start menu, and select PowerShell Administrator

Copy and paste the following contents into PowerShell and press Enter.

This process will safely uninstall all unwanted Apps. I did NOT include the App Store in this list.
