Is it possible to add legacy applications to Defaults list...

I have an old Photoshop app (v.5.5) I've always used as the default to open .bmp, .jpg, .png and .tiff pics. Of course Win10 insists that I use their own 'Photos' app. Pshop isn't listed in any pic extension I look under. It sort of looks like in Settings/Apps/Apps and Features there might be a way to add Pshop to be a Default if I 'Modify' it? So I hit 'Modify' and up comes this warning.

I don't want to clutter up my C (boot) drive with apps. I have a much bigger D drive for that, where my Pshop is installed. What also confuses me is, "Why is it looking for Pshops' Setup.exe file"?

Any thoughts and help appreciated. Thanks.

Double-click the setup.exe file on your desktop and when you are prompted for an install location, select the D: drive.

The easiest way to set an old app like that as the default is to right-click on any .bmp file and select Open with > Choose another app. Scroll to the bottom of the list and click More apps. If Photoshop isn't in that list, scroll to the bottom and click on Look for another app on this PC. Browse to find your Photoshop and select it. Make sure you tick the box for 'Always use this app to open .bmp files' before you click OK. Repeat this process for .jpg, .png and .tiff files.

PS: once you have set Photoshop as default for one type of file it should appear in the 'More apps' list.

Ben, Photoshop is already installed on my D drive. The Settings/Default Apps can't (or won't) find it there, even though it finds other old apps on my D drive and offers them as default options for other file extension categories.

Bree, that's a good idea. I think I accidentally came across that fix when I tried that on a .png pic. The thing is, I gotta find pics with different extensions on the web if I'm to snag them all. I guess I'll just have to Bing & Google pics to find them all.

Where would I find a .raw pic? Hmmm...

I have the same problem with PaintShop Pro 7, it isn't listed in Settings/Defaults. The 'Open with' method of setting defaults works though.

Wow, MS really doesn't want other apps not directly under their thumb to be on their OS, do they.

It's not that. Old apps like yours and mine used deprecated methods of setting defaults and announcing to windows what files they could open. Those methods aren't supported in Windows 10, hence they won't get listed in settings/defaults.

Ah, that's too bad. Weird thing is that Win10 still recognizes a few extensions for CoolEdit2000 by Syntrillium. That's a pretty old app.
