You should get a prompt when inserting a blank disc as to use as a USB drive or read-only disc. Used to be the CD-R stood for Recordable once while the CD-RW was Rewrite-able, could be erased and used again. Same applies to DVD discs. Don't yet have a Blu-Ray burner [only a reader] so can't comment if the same applies.

Thanks for the correction, Berton. I haven't burned a CD in several years

CD-RW's and burning like you want to do is hit or miss and iffy at best. It sounds like the disc will work like a floppy diskette but over the last 16 years working computer forums I've seen lots of posts of it not working correctly.

I do a lot of audio CD burning for my recording studio clients. Best option, if you want to put something on a CD, only burn a CD-R, "audio CD" for regular (wav) audio discs, or "data CD" for MP3's each time. CD-R's are relatively cheap (you can buy them for 25 cents each and sometimes less).

Audio CD is a different style of data disc. There is no such thing as closing it. All tracks have to be burned in one go.

The other choice in WMP is Data CD or DVD. This is for MP3 files indeed any music in files.

By default the built in CD burning produces multisession discs, though MS put that a different way. There is no indication going the WMP way. A WPL is also added.

To avoid having a WPL you can just use the Data Disc method in the File Manager, use the 2nd option as the first is packet writing.

WMP does the required data conversion, for simple scenarios, depending on the source material.

I have CD-RW discs from 16 years ago. They are burned/reburned the same way as a CD-R.

The built in Windows way is rather confusing, however there are a number of free Applications doing the same job like CDBurnerXP (Does DVD and Win 10 despite the name), Ashampoo Burning Studio are the easier ones to use.

    Hi folks

As Windows can now mount image CD's and DVD's (.iso) after you've created the .iso files (whether Audio, Video or data) you can save these on to HDD -- great for backup / archive and all the standard music / video players will play these too as if they were physical CD's.

Typically an audio cd will have a load of files e.g file1.cda etc -- so you'll probably need to tag them when ripping the cd / dvd after you've created it.

The advantage of this is that you can burn the CD's again at any time / make multiple copies or simply get rid of the optical media altogether -- especially as a lot of modern PC's don't have DVD / CD drives any more.

If you physically need the optical media --OK --this is just a suggestion as to how you can archive and keep the DVD/CD's on HDD.

Incidentally KODI on say an amazon tv stick plugged into a remote TV can play DVD .iso files with menus etc so also having the .iso on HDD is an easy way of remote playing multi media files without the bother of physical media.

BTW tagging programs like winamp etc can still tag tracks on virtual CD's (.iso files) just as physical DVD's / CD's. Good tag editor is Mp3vtag.

    Cheers
