Windows Media Player 12 stopped working suddenly, wont play mp3 or wav

    I have WMP12 Win10 64bit.
It was playing WAVs and MP3s fine, but suddenly stopped working.

Cant find a WMP12 download anywhere to try reinstall.

I also have asio4all on my computer but thats not active I believe.
Groove Music plays all fine. Why has WMP12 stopped wortking?

well, sorry, my crystal ball is down for scheduled maintenance..

You might get a clue from e.g. Reliability History (type Reli in Cortana search) and click on the red x's - see if any refer to WMP. The related data may give you a clue.

Which is your Windows build? Win key + R, winver

Here's what I'd do (I have build 1709 - may be different in 1803 if you have that):
Windows Media Player 12 stopped working suddenly, wont play mp3 or wav-1.jpg

Try unchecking the box, restarting, checking the box, restarting and see if WMP works then.

Otherwise- try using a system restore point created before this started happening.
Have you made any changes? Received updates?

I'm on 1909 and I have the same problem with Media Player and WAV files. I have a device which generates WAV files, really quick "audio memos." I've used both Media Player and iTunes to play these WAV files. But now Media Player appears to play the file but there is no sound. Groove also doesn't play these WAV files.

iTunes still works, but I have separate issues with that program, which I discuss in another thread.

Perhaps you could upload one- if necessary for site compatibility, zip it. Has to be reasonably small (8Mb limit?)

You won't. As dalchina points out, it is a built in feature of Windows 10 and not installed separately.

I have no problems playing .WAV files in WMP12 (or in Groove Music) in 1909, build 18363.535. There may be something odd about these particular .WAV files (in which case a sample may help diagnosis).

Other possibilities are that the audio driver has recently been updated, or that WMP is set up to use an output device other than the default speakers.

Also note you can adjust volume per player/program separately- can these play other files?

I couldn't get WMP to even recognize those WAV files when I opened up WMP and then tried to "import" the WAV files. I also checked the volume and it was set at 100%. Audio output device is Windows default.

    Update:

Thanks to very good advice in a thread about iTunes, I got that program to work satisfactorily. So the heck with WMP for now.

However, it's only fair to everyone else that we solve this problem. So I've attached a ZIP with four very small WAV files. They are "audio notes," each less than 30 seconds, probably low-quality mono.

They are small male speech samples - according to VLC player, Groove and- yes - WMP.

WMP plays these via Open with, and if assigned as default, double click and drag 'n drop on mine.

Again, please confirm WMP will play some audio on your PC.

They all play in my Windows Media Player (and any other player). They use the PCM codec in unsigned 8-bit format (pcm_u8).

PCM was the first and simplest of all audio formats. It is the standard for the WAV format and should be playable in anything.

Windows uses the Wave Form Audio (WAV) file format to store sounds as waveforms. One minute of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM)-encoded sound can occupy as little as 644 kilobytes (KB) or as much as 27 megabytes (MB) of storage. This size of the storage space depends on the sampling frequency, the type of sound (mono or stereo), and the number of bits that are used for the sample.

Whatever is preventing you playing them is specific to your machine. Have you installed any third-party codecs? If so, it seems that you may be using a broken PCM codec in place of the standard Windows one.

I just did a drag and drop of those WAV files and even through WMP "plays" them there is no sound. So I did a drag and drop of an MP3 file, and there is sound when I played that file.

Yes, these are small male speech samples. Me, recording short "audio memos."

How come iTunes can play these WAV files, but no other audio players can?

If it matters, I recently ran sfc /scannow, which did find and repair some corrupt files.
