    Help! Can't install anything

Just tried installing LibreOffice, Almost installed then it started rolling back. Said...

    Virus & Threat Protection
    Unauthorized Changes Blocked
    Controlled Folder Access Blocked

So I turned off Windows Defender and tried again. Same message.
Tried Safe Mode...No Windows Installer in Safe Mode
Tried a different AV. Bitdefender. Tried installing. Got to 90% then started rollback. Same error message.
Made sure Defender was off, allowed exe files, ran as Administrator. Same error message.

Does anyone know whats going on???

    Running Win 10 1709 16299.431

Turning off Defender real time AV protection is not what you need here. Try turning off Controlled Folder Access.

Thanks. I'll get back to you Tomorrow. I seem to be in a very slow Windows Feature update right now. Oh, I found the Control Folder Access. Don't know how I missed it before.
Question... If the Folder is turned off, will it stay off or will it turn on after a re-boot?

Controlled Folder Access will stay turned off until you turn it back on yourself.

If you turn it back on after the install (which I'd recommend for your protection) you may find you need to allow certain apps through to let them work fully, that's Option Three in the tutorial.

You'll know which ones need to be granted access as you will get a notification from Controlled Folder Access. In the case of the Libre Office you are installing it will be soffice.bin that needs to be granted access.

Thanks. Funny thing, past 2 months, I was installing some software and I never had this problem come up. Where/when did this controlled folder come from?

And my desktop is STILL updating. My Tablet was faster.

6 hrs. to update to 1803. Geez.

Controlled Folder Access is a new feature starting with 1709. In 1803 it is also described as Ransomware Protection, but otherwise hasn't changed. By default it is turned off.

When turned on, known trusted apps (third-party and MS) are whitelisted so not all apps or their installers will be blocked, for example MS Office. is on the whitelist.

Apps like LibreOffice that are not on the whitelist need to be granted access, you soon find out which they are because Defender notifies you when access is blocked. Took me a couple of weeks before I had added all the apps I needed - about half a dozen apps, including LibreOffice and 7-Zip.

Got it. LibreOffice installed and working. Controlled Folder Access was on by default, on my Desktop. Its off on my Tablet. Strange.
Thank you very much for the help.

    Glad to have helped.

Controlled folder access is useful protection against malware that may try to encrypt your documents. Consider turning it on, even though it can be a bit of a pain at first as you will have to allow access for those apps you do use.
