Maps App - Directions can't find any starting location

Hi, I almost never use the apps MS supplies. Reading a post, I thought I'd try Maps, and in particular its Directions feature.

However, the starting point can never be found. I get
Try entering a nearby location as the starting
point. We couldn't find this one.
I've tried a couple of major national landmarks such as Tower Bridge, also Birmingham New Street (for which it can produce pictures and info); also my address and location.

My Android smart phone does well one this with various apps- but not my PC. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Did you get the option to set a default location? If you do this it will use the default location as the starting point.

    Thanks, yes, tried
    a. My location
    b. Setting default (just confirmed it is still set)
    c. Typing a specific location

Just as well I'm not walking around some new city with my PC in my hands... which I wouldn't anyway!
(I was most impressed with a Polish web site a Polish girl told me about- integrates all transport and directions- trains, trams, buses, metro...times, map...)
