PC hangs/freezes while splitting a large video

I am trying to split a large MPEG2 video (around 14 GB) and computer hangs within few minute. I checked that processor starts getting very hot. PC is AMD and Windows 10. Is it a PC issue or Windows 10 issue. Earlier I had Win 7 but never got chance to split a Big Video on that. I have no problem in splitting if the video is small. I have tried different programs for splitting and all end up in freezing.

I would take the cover off the computer and clean out the CPU fan and heat sink, You might also want to consider taking the heat sink off and clean off the the old thermal paste and renew it.

While your waiting to do that I would look at the settings of the program and see if there is a way to lower the performance of the amount of CPU it uses.

Thanks. For reply. I have already cleaned the heat sink but no effect.

That's what Ithought, too much load on the system. Try some older SW like Download Easy Video Splitter by DoEasier Tech Inc

Trying to work on a 14GB video with only 2GB installed RAM, you're going to be hammering the swapfile. That alone could be sufficient to explain why the system slows to a crawl.

If, as is likely with that amount of RAM, you run the 32-bit version of Windows 10 then installing more RAM is not going to help much. The 4GB address limit of a 32-bit OS means you'd only have about 2.9GB available to use, however much RAM you add.

You might place less demands on the system using the command line utility FFmpeg. https://ffmpeg.org/

Its parammeters -ss and -to can be used to specify start and end times of a section of video you want to extract. The -c copy parameter will avoid the need for any codec processing for decoding/recoding the video while working on it.

Can you pinpoint the exact problem. Whether motherboard or processor or ram. I can increase the ram to 4 GB, if it could solve the problem. Or if it is other specifications, then what minimum specification PC is required for my task.

Is your windows 32-bit or 64-bit? If 32-bit then you won't be able to use all of that 4GB. Typically you'll have about 2.6GB available to use...

...The total address space available with 32-bit is 4GB and has to be shared with things like graphics RAM. 1.4GB hardware reserved is typical for a 32-bit system...
1.1gb cached memory out of 2.6gb ram

Actually all of them RAM would have greatest impact. You really need older programs. Ones like Handbrake or using Handbrake and Vondershare for instance make even my 8core, 16 thread processor and 16GB f RAM sweat a lot.
