    Microsoft Edge and CCleaner (v5.42.6499).

I use W10 and IE10 and Firefox, not Edge. Just recently found CCleaner now skips IE Temp Int Files, History and Cookies. Reverted to earlier version, same.
A Google search suggested this could be due to something running in the background. Looking in Task Manager, I found IE and Firefox do not show unless actually in use. However Edge constantly shows in background processes. Initially tried renaming the Edge file in This PC > System Apps –no effect. Then Settings > Privacy> Background apps > Microsoft Edge > OFF – no effect.
The only thing which works is going into Task Manager everytime > Microsoft Edge (5 entries) > End Task.
Is there any way to permanently disable Edge as I believe it is not recommended (or possible?) to remove it?
Only got to this point by trial and error, rather than knowledge.
    Thanks for any help.

Same is happening to me every 4-5 days. CCleaner v.5.42.6495 keep skipping cookies /and other stuff/ from Edge, which I don't use at all. Found temporarly solution - manually clear the cookies within Edge and then reanalyse and run CCleaner.
Sorry I can't help much but that's all I can do.
Maybe more experienced members in this forum have the answer.

You might want to try manual deletion in Ccleaner.

Thanks Ivan and Callender. Well well, haven't used or knew about manual deletion of cookies - just assumed CCleaner was removing them. Turned out there was a hell of a lot in there, >60. 95% of them meant damn all to me so I deleted them. Presumably if I really need them they "will be back".

Looks like that may have done the trick.
    Thanks.

Turns out this has to be done every time you turn PC on, MS Edge again running in background.Go into CCleaner > Options > Cookies and I see:
The following application(s) need to be closed to view cookies:
    Microsoft Edge
Do you want CCleaner to close the them? YES
The application is taking a long time to close.
Would you like it to force it to close? YES

Therefore quicker just to go to Task Manager, unless one can turn Edge off permanently.

Control panel > Default Programs > Set your default program > Default Apps > Web Browser, it is set to Edge, now IE. Looks like I may have finally got rid of the pesky Edge.
